The curtains finally came down on Lucknow Super Giants’ disastrous IPL 2026 season with yet another crushing defeat, as they ended the campaign at the bottom of the points table. Much of the criticism has revolved around skipper Rishabh Pant, whose expensive move to the franchise has failed to yield the desired results.

Signed for a record-breaking INR 27 crore ahead of IPL 2025, Pant was expected to become the long-term face and leader of the franchise. However, the investment has backfired badly for LSG.

Pant endured another underwhelming season with the bat, scoring only 312 runs in 13 innings at an average below 30 and a strike rate of 138.05. His captaincy returns have also been disappointing, with LSG losing 17 of the 28 matches under his leadership.

The biggest indication of change came after the Punjab Kings defeat, when Director of Cricket Tom Moody admitted that the franchise would seriously reassess its leadership structure ahead of IPL 2027.

With Pant’s future as captain hanging by a thread, LSG could now turn towards its potential successors within the squad. Let’s take a look at the possible names who can lead LSG in IPL 2027.

Another major advantage is his ability to contribute consistently with the bat while leading. Since 2023, Markram has developed into a dependable top-order batter in franchise cricket and has shown the temperament to anchor innings when required.

Markram has captained in 110 T20 matches between 2016 and 2026 across various competitions. During this period, his teams have won 56 matches while losing 49, alongside two tied matches and three no-results, giving him a positive overall captaincy record.

He has captained the South African T20I side in international cricket and also led Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20. Under his leadership, Sunrisers Eastern Cape emerged as one of the strongest teams in the tournament too.

How Mitchell Marsh Is Primed For The Leadership Spot?

Mitchell Marsh has steadily evolved into one of Australia’s most respected white-ball leaders. The experienced all-rounder brings strong dressing-room authority, tactical flexibility, and international captaincy exposure.

Marsh has captained both Australia and Perth Scorchers in T20 cricket. His aggressive but positive style of leadership often encourages fearless cricket, something that LSG lacked during IPL 2026.

Mitchell Marsh has captained in 60 T20 matches between 2014 and 2026. Across those games, his teams have registered 34 wins and 23 defeats, alongside three no-results, giving him one of the strongest win-loss ratios among the contenders.

He captained Australia national cricket team in T20 internationals from 2023 onwards and also led Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League.

Nicholas Pooran

How Nicholas Pooran Is Primed For The Leadership Spot?

Nicholas Pooran has become one of the most experienced franchise captains in modern T20 cricket. Over the years, he has led sides in the CPL, ILT20, MLC, SA20, and international cricket for the West Indies.

Pooran’s biggest leadership strength is his understanding of modern franchise cricket dynamics. He has played alongside global stars across multiple leagues and understands how to manage high-pressure dressing rooms.

Unlike an external leadership appointment, Pooran already shares strong chemistry with the current LSG core group. His presence inside the franchise setup could make the transition smoother if LSG decide to move on from Pant.

Pooran has captained in 84 T20 matches between 2021 and 2026. During this period, his teams have secured 43 wins and suffered 39 defeats, alongside one tied match and one no-result.

He has led the West Indies cricket team in T20 internationals and also captained multiple franchise teams including MI Emirates, MI New York, and Trinbago Knight Riders.

Nicholas Pooran has enjoyed notable success in franchise leagues. Under his captaincy, MI Emirates emerged as one of the strongest teams in ILT20, while MI New York also performed competitively in Major League Cricket.

Will Pooran Be A Better Choice?

Pooran’s biggest advantage is continuity. Unlike Markram or Marsh, he already has a strong connection with the current LSG environment and fanbase.

His leadership record of 43 wins in 84 T20 matches is respectable, especially considering he has captained across several leagues with constantly changing squads.

Hence, purely on leadership numbers and tactical experience, Pooran still presents a stronger captaincy profile than Pant’s current IPL record of 11 wins and 17 losses.

Conclusion: Should LSG Really Sack Rishabh Pant?

Despite the disappointing numbers, completely removing Rishabh Pant as captain may not necessarily be the smartest long-term move for LSG. From a pure statistical standpoint, Markram, Marsh, and Pooran all possess superior captaincy records.

However, captaincy decisions in the IPL are no longer based only on statistics. Rishabh Pant remains one of the biggest faces in Indian cricket and continues to be the brand identity of the Lucknow Super Giants franchise. Sacking him after just two seasons could severely damage the franchise’s long-term image and create instability within the setup.

LSG may instead consider strengthening the leadership group around Pant rather than fully stripping him of captaincy. 

While Markram, Marsh, and Pooran statistically look like better captains at present, removing Pant entirely from leadership could ultimately hurt the franchise more from a branding and stability perspective.
