The India-Australia relationship is at its peak powers, both cricketing-wise and geopolitically. On Friday, the Prime Ministers of the two countries, India's Narendra Modi and Australian Anthony Albanese, announced the landmark Big Bash League (BBL 2026/27) fixture to be hosted in Chennai.
In what would be the first of its kind, the BBL has become the first foreign T20 league to host one of its matches in India. The opening game of the tournament between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers will be contested at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on December 12.
Will an IPL 2027 fixture will be hosted in Australia?
Cricket Australia (CA) is attempting to maximise the BBL's potential by reaching out to the Indian audience, which is why the Australian board will make every effort to secure a packed crowd of 38,000 passionate fans to popularise the league among the masses.
Reported by The Age, CA would also look to return to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) by hosting an IPL game, either in Perth or Melbourne.
In this article, we will analyse the IPL teams that will be best suited to play in the foreign conditions for a mega clash in Australia.
IPL Teams built for Australian conditions- Mumbai Indians and KKR
Every team in the IPL gets a massive purse of INR 125 crore to build a team they believe is best suited to lift the coveted trophy. Teams usually try to construct a core that blends well and performs well together, especially in home games.
More often than not, every team does the same extract. CSK opts for a team with the best finger spinners, RCB go for heavy batting, while SRH is regarded as one of the best hosting teams in the league.

However, IPL sides closest to the Australian-like conditions have to be the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) and the third most-successful team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Wankhede Stadium and Eden Gardens are regarded as the juiciest tracks in India, with bounce and seam on offer for the bowlers, the two USPs of Australian conditions.
Thus, the Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Corbin Bosch vs Harshit Rana, Kartik Tyagi, and Matheesha Pathirana battle will be a riveting one.
Best suited IPL teams based on popularity- CSK and RCB
After 19 years of running, IPL has become one of the biggest sporting brands, with a valuation estimated at roughly $18.5 billion. Not only has the league gained popularity, but the IPL teams have become equally famous.
The other five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), are one of the most fan-loved franchises. There have been instances in the IPL where CSK fans have outnumbered the fans of the opposition even while playing at their home venue. Moreover, if the opening BBL fixture is played in Chennai, then the Super Kings flying to Australia would be an apt choice.
The other IPL team, as per the team popularity, has to be the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Although they have always been loved by their admirers, the RCB rage has only doubled in the last two years as the franchise has lifted trophies back-to-back.
Also, a Virat Kohli vs MS Dhoni clash in Australia would be a genius move from a marketing perspective.
However, these are only afterthoughts at the moment; neither the BCCI nor the CA has commented on the the IPL happening in Australia.
