Team India have hit rock bottom. The Men in Blue have now gone six-T20I matches without a win, their longest winless spell in T20I history. It all started with the Ireland tour, where the Men in Blue suffered a 0-2 defeat in the two-match series.

Coming to the England series, the first match got washed out due to rain. Following that, England handed India embarrassing defeats in the rest of the 3 matches. Now, with 5 defeats, India qualification for the LA28 Olympics has taken a hit. 

Therefore, this article will shed light on India qualification scenario for the LA28 Olympics.

LA28 Olympics Eligibility

As the eligibility criterias confirmed by the ICC on their official website on Monday, June 29, the highest ranked nation from the continents of Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania will secure automatic qualification for the men's T20 event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The ICC rankings of those four teams will be determined based on the ICC Men's T20I Rankings at the conclusion of the qualification period on December 31, 2026.

A total of 6 teams will play at the LA28 Olympics. Five top-ranked teams from each continent will play in the LA28 Olympics. The remaining one place via the ICC Olympics Qualifier.

India Qualification Scenario Explained

India Qualification scenario for 2028 Olympics is quite simple as they need to top the ranking charts among Asian teams by the end of the year.

At the time of writing this article, India are currently the top-ranked T20I team with 269 rating points. The next best-ranked Asian side is Pakistan with a rating of 240. Now, India are on the brink of losing the top spot, but all they need to ensure is that they don’t fall below Pakistan before December 31, 2026 to confirm India qualification qualificiation.

Scenario Revealed For India To Finish Above Pakistan

  • 3 T20Is vs Zimbabwe
  • 5 T20Is vs West Indies
  • 5 T20Is vs New Zealand
  • 3 T20Is vs Sri Lanka

India have 17 T20Is left to play in 2026.

On the other hand, Pakistan have no T20Is scheduled so far in 2026. Therefore, for India, they have no threat of Pakistan overtaking them. However, the Shreyas Iyer-led side need to make sure that they don’t suffer more than 8-9 defeats in the remaining 17 T20Is.

India still have the chance of falling below Pakistan if they again lose in bulk. Therefore, India need to play good cricket as they have almost qualified for the LA28 Olympics.

Rest, Bangladesh have T20 rating points of 224, and Sri Lanka at 221. Afghanistan is not too far behind as they have rating points of 220, but they are too far to catch India.
