Gautam Gambhir is India's head coach till 2027 WC | PC- AFP
Team India is performing underwhelmingly in the United Kingdom under Gautam Gambhir and Shreyas Iyer. First, the T20 World Champions lost the first-ever series in Ireland, and now, they are nil-three down in the T20I vs England.
Although India have won two successive ICC white-ball titles with Gambhir at the helm, his coaching methods, especially his skills as a man-manager, have been heavily criticised in the media and by certain former cricketers.
Reportedly, the top officials at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters are not pleased with the former India opener's ways. Moreover, the Indian board secretary, Devajit Saikia, has revealed that Gambhir's performances will be reviewed soon.
If reports are to be believed, the Head of Cricket at the NCA, VVS Laxman, will take care of the Indian side during the tour of Zimbabwe and the Asian Games 2026.
At the moment, there are clouds over the Indian head coach's future, even though his contract runs until the ODI World Cup 2027.
In this article, we will discuss three overseas coaches who can be looked at as Gautam Gambhir's replacements if the BCCI fire him.
3 overseas coaches who can replace Gautam Gambhir
Ricky Ponting
Australia's legendary captain, Ricky Ponting, has been extremely successful during his stints as a coach with Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings. His Aussie-esque shrewdness injected a whole new energy into the two teams, who had below-par records until then.

Under Ponting, DC reached their first-ever IPL final in 2020. Then, with PBKS, he helped them finish as runners-up for the first time in more than a decade. Interestingly, during his time with DC and PBKS, the former Australian batter had Shreyas Iyer under his time. With Iyer currently leading India in T20Is, the 51-year-old will be a great substitute for Gautam Gambhir.
Andy Flower
The former Zimbabwe legend Andy Flower has been equally successful in his second innings as a coach. There will be no trophy that the Zimbabwean great has not won as a coach.
Under his regime, teams have won in the IPL, PSL and The Hundred. Moreover, Flower, as England’s head coach, led them to multiple Ashes victories and lifted their maiden ICC trophy during the 2010 T20 World Cup.
And now, after RCB's twin titles in IPL 2025 and 2026, Flower's credentials as a coach have doubled up. Thus, the 58-year-old will be a brilliant option to replace Gambhir as India’s head coach.
Tom Moody
Whenever BCCI posts the position of India's head coach, Tom Moody has remained the constant applicant, even though the Indian board always found him the second-best person to apply for the job.
The former Australian all-rounder was the head coach of the legendary Sri Lanka team from 2005 to 2007; during his tenure, they ended as runners-up in the ODI World Cup in the West Indies.
He was also responsible for SRH lifting the trophy in IPL 2026, with Moody serving as the head coach. Moreover, he has had a close relationship with the Oval Invincibles (now called MI London) for their hat trick of trophies in The Hundred.
Thus, if BCCI look to replace Gambhir with a foreign coach, Moody needs to be the first name on their list.
