On Tuesday, Indian cricket hit a new low. The Men in Blue suffered a 125-run defeat against England, their worst-ever defeat in T20Is. India have now not won a single game in their last five matches, and India coach Gautam Gambhir is under the radar.
The World champions have got off to the worst start since the T20 World Cup 2026, and the new coach-captain pair of Gautam Gambhir-Shreyas Iyer is yet to register a single win.
Gautam Gambhir’s Resignation Demanded
Under Gambhir, India have already won two ICC titles, but along with the highs, the former India opener has also seen some never-before-seen lows, which have come to haunt him. At present, India are struggling under his guidance, and the fans are demanding his resignation.
Gautam Gambhir has a contract till the 2027 ODI World Cup, but the BCCI can bring in other names for the shortest format and opt for split coaching. Therefore, this article will shed light on three India players who can replace Gautam Gambhir as the next India T20 coach.
India's Potential Replacements For Gautam Gambhir
1. VVS Laxman
For the past few years, VVS Laxman has been pitched as the ideal prospect to become India's head coach. Notably, the former India batter currently heads the NCA. The reason why Laxman is the ideal choice for the next head coach is the fact that he has coached the Men in Blue in a few series when the head coach was not available.

VVS Laxman toured Zimbabwe in 2024 as head coach after Rahul Dravid was not available. In the latest events, India will again tour Zimbabwe, and Laxman is expected to be the head coach there as well to give Gautam Gambhir a rest. If Laxman does well there, then the BCCI can seriously consider him as the next coach.
2. Dinesh Karthik
The reason why the BCCI fast-tracked Gautam Gambhir as India head coach was that he guided KKR to their 3rd IPL title. The Knight Riders ended their 10-year-old drought and lifted the title. Therefore, by the same logic, Dinesh Karthik can also be roped in by the BCCI.
For the unversed, Dinesh Kartik has been associated with RCB for the last two seasons as a mentor and guided the Challengers to two straight titles. Therefore, the 41-year-old also deserves a shot at the head coach position for Team India.
3. Ashish Nehra
Gujarat Titans have Ashish Nehra, who somehow redefined the way T20 cricket is played in today’s time. Nehra’s focus is on consistency. The Titans have won a title in their inaugural season and came close twice when they lost the final against Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Therefore, Ashish Nehra also has a strong chance to replace Gautam Gambhir as the next India coach for T20Is.
