Ahead of IPL 2027, the BCCI has asked all 10 franchises to submit feedback on the impact player rule. The BCCI is mulling the future of the controversial rule that came into effect in 2023.
Several teams and players have raised their voices against the impact player rule in the past, but the board refused to have any conversation up until now. So far, there is no update on the feedback from the teams, but several players’ careers will be on the line.
Therefore, this article will shed light on 5 players whose careers will take a hit if the impact player rule gets scrapped.
1. Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma’s last two seasons have been full of struggle and fighting injuries. However, the impact sub rule has helped the Hitman massively. In IPL 2025, Rohit Sharma played 15 matches and batted as an impact sub on 5 occasions.
In IPL 2026, Rohit Sharma played just 9 matches due to a hamstring injury and was out of the tournament for nearly a month. Had the impact player rule not been in place, the hitman would have been ruled out of the entire IPL 2026.
In the recently concluded season, Rohit Sharma played as an impact player in 7 of the 9 matches. So, at present, Rohit is heavily dependent on the impact player rule, and if the BCCI decides to scrap it, then MI will be forced to mull over Rohit’s future earlier than they would have thought.
2. MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni is another curious case in IPL. The 45-year-old missed the entire IPL 2026 due to injury, and there is again a question on his future as the India legend will be close to turning 46 by IPL 2027.
Impact player rule seems to be the only possible option for Dhoni to continue doing what he loves, and if the rule gets scrapped then the great man himself would be forced to think about his career and future.

It is worth noting that ever since the rule got introduced in 2023, MS Dhoni has never played a single IPL match as an impact sub.
3. Rahul Tewatia
Gujarat Titans’ middle-order has been questioned over and over again. They have the finest top-order but one of the weakest middle-orders that got exposed in the IPL 2026 final against RCB. Rahul Tewatia’s inclusion in the team has often raised eyebrows.
In IPL 2025, Rahul scored just 99 runs in 12 innings, while he scored 190 runs in IPL 2026. Talking about the recently concluded season, Tewatia came in as an Impact sub in 9 matches, one of the most by a player in that season.
Therefore, if the rule does get scrapped, then Rahul Tewatia will be heavily impacted.
4. Suyash Sharma
RCB also have a problem in front of them if the impact sub rule gets scrapped. In the IPL 2026 final, the Challengers played with just a sole spinner - Krunal Pandya, which is worrying for Suyash Sharma.
The Delhi-based spinner took just 9 wickets in 12 innings in IPL 2026 and played as an impact sub in 5 matches in IPL 2025 and 7 matches in IPL 2026.
5. Digvesh Rathi
Digvesh Rathi is another spinner who might be affected by the scrapping of the impact sub rule. Rathi had an underwhelming IPL 2026. He took just 5 wickets in 10 innings.
Now, LSG have roped in Kuldeep Yadav for the upcoming season, resulting in Rathi getting pushed down the pecking order. Hence, if the impact sub rule also gets away, then he will have a hard time getting matches.
