In a significant development, the BCCI have reportedly asked all IPL franchises to submit feedback on the Impact Player rule. The rule is likely to be reviewed, and its outcome may jeopardise MS Dhoni’s IPL future.

The Impact Player rule was introduced in IPL 2023, which allows a team to replace one player with another during a match, effectively giving teams access to 12 players rather than the traditional 11. 

However, the rule has contributed to deeper batting line-ups and, according to critics, has made life harder for bowlers. Several players like Rohit Sharma have publicly criticised the rule, forcing the BCCI to spring into action.

BCCI to review the Impact Player rule in IPL

According to reports, the BCCI have asked all 10 IPL teams to submit feedback on several operational issues from IPL 2026. Among those issues, the Impact Player rule has specifically been included.

This is noteworthy because the rule was seemingly expected to continue for another season. At the previous captains' meeting, the understanding was that the Impact Player provision would remain in place for one more year. 

So the BCCI asking for feedback now creates uncertainty over whether the rule will actually remain for IPL 2027. Franchises have been asked to send their feedback by August 31.

How will the Impact Player rule affect MS Dhoni’s future?

Having said that, if the Impact Player rule is indeed scrapped from the IPL 2027 season, it will risk the future of MS Dhoni. The former legend is now 45 and his batting role has become increasingly uncertain because of age and injury issues.

If the Impact Player rule remains, CSK have greater tactical flexibility when constructing a side around an ageing Dhoni. His value doesn't necessarily have to come solely from batting runs. 

His leadership influence can remain extremely valuable, especially at a time where CSK are rebuilding. But if the rule is removed, CSK loses that flexibility. 

Every player in the XI has to justify his place through his on-field contribution, which could make MS Dhoni's position more complicated if his batting output declines further. 

MS Dhoni remains non-committal for IPL

Interestingly, MS Dhoni himself remains non-committal for the IPL. In the 2026 season, he skipped the first half due to injury and later refused to be available for selection, saying he doesn’t want to ruin the team combination as CSK were fighting for a playoff spot.

So overall, Dhoni ended up playing zero games in IPL 2026. And as far as the 2027 season is concerned, there is still a question mark on his return. CSK have suggested that they are confident of the ex-skipper’s comeback.

However, MS Dhoni has repeatedly said that his future depends on how his body responds to the gruelling fitness demands. If he feels he can no longer contribute to the team’s success, Dhoni may call it quits.
