Australia have reportedly come to a decision on Marnus Labuschagne after he registered a poor series against Bangladesh earlier this month. Captain Pat Cummins and head coach Andrew McDonald together sealed his fate.

Labuschagne, despite being one of the senior-most players in Australia’s Test squad, hasn’t scored a century in the last three years. In the recent 2-game series against Bangladesh, he scored 1, 31 and 4. 

Not only that, but Marnus’ ICC Test batting ranking has also fallen dramatically to 38th. It's a steep downfall for a batter who once ranked No. 1.

Marnus Labuschagne to be retained in Australia’s Test team

Naturally, there have been growing calls for Australia to replace him with another batter. However, as confirmed by chief selector George Bailey, Marnus Labuschagne won’t be sacked anytime soon.

He is set to feature in the Australia tour of South Africa scheduled in October 2026. The selectors apparently believe Labuschagne is still one of Australia's best available options, particularly for a demanding Test tour like South Africa.

Not only that, but captain Pat Cummins and coach Andrew McDonald have reportedly been impressed with what they have seen from Labuschagne in the nets. 

So, while his match performances have been disappointing, the Australian management apparently believes his batting is in good enough shape to warrant another opportunity. 

But at the same time, the South Africa tour could therefore be a make-or-break series for him. If Marnus Labuschagne fails to convert this opportunity, it might be the end of his illustrious Test career.

Labuschagne’s sharp decline is concerning

While Australia trusts Marnus Labuschagne’s skills and experience, it doesn't change the fact that his rough patch has lasted more than it should have. Between 2019 and 2022, he was one of Australia’s best red-ball talents, averaging 53.36 and thus achieving No. 1 rank in Test batting rankings.

However, his form has declined significantly since then. He last scored a Test hundred in the Ashes 2023. Moreover, in 2026, Marnus has accumulated just 121 runs in five Test innings. 

His form further came into scrutiny when Australia settled for a 1-1 draw in the 2-game Test series against Bangladesh. Hence, critics like Ricky Ponting believe the time is up for Marnus Labuschagne. 

But Cummins and McDonald are yet to give up on Labuschagne. The upcoming South Africa tour will ultimately decide his fate.

What went wrong for Marnus Labuschagne?

Having said that, Marnus Labuschagne’s form isn’t one bad series or a temporary slump. It's been a multi-year decline. Notably, his biggest strength was his ability to survive the difficult early period and then turn a start into a huge score. 

That's no longer happening consistently. Instead, he's increasingly being dismissed before he can properly settle. The result is fewer big scores and a dramatic fall in his overall run production.

Since his last Test century in the 2023 Ashes, he has scored only 937 runs in more than 40 innings at 26.03. That's particularly concerning for a No. 3 batter.

Hence, to recover from this slump, Marnus Labuschagne must spend more and more time at the crease. He must fight for each run, and eventually, the grit will be rewarded.
