Former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh wants to see Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the national ODI squad. The multi-World Cup winner has also urged the Indian selection committee to pick Ishan Kishan in the 50-overs setup.
It is worth noting that while Ishan has played 32 ODIs for Team India, Abhishek and Sooryavanshi are yet to be considered for India’s 50-overs squad.
India urged to pick Vaibhav and Abhishek Sharma in ODIs
Yuvraj Singh is of the opinion that the BCCI selection committee to not doing justice to India’s talent by constantly ignoring the likes of Abhishek and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi from the national ODI squad.
While speaking with the PTI, he said, “I would love to see him (Abhishek Sharma) in the ODIs, to be honest. I have said this before: if we are not picking guys like Abhishek, Ishan Kishan, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in 50-over cricket, then somewhere down the line, we are not doing justice to our talent.”
However, Yuvraj Singh also acknowledged the intense competition that exists between Team India players these days just to find a spot in the ODI group.
With Team India already settling in on its core for next year’s 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, Yuvraj believes that the likes of Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ishan Kishan can still find a place in the national ODI squad, either sooner or later.
He explained “I understand we have some great players and it is hard to make a spot for them. I think the way they are performing, and the other guys, they should be in the squad soon, hopefully.”
Can Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma play ODIs for India?
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his international debut for India through a T20I series in England a few months ago. The cricketer received his maiden T20I captain shortly after enjoying a record-breaking IPL 2026 season for the Rajasthan Royals.
Since then, Sooryavanshi has played 10 T20Is for India, and was part of the team that clinched the 2026 Asian Games gold medal and won the series in Zimbabwe and New Zealand.
However, the youngster has also shattered quite a few records in the game’s 50-overs setup. Just this year, he blazed India U19 team to a historic 2026 ICC U19 World Cup win in Zimbabwe. The cricketer also holds the record for one of the fastest List A centuries in the world for his 84-ball 190 in India for the Bihar team.
Abhishek Sharma, on the other hand, has played 69 List A games in his career, aggregating 2,196 runs in the process at a strike rate of 100.18. As of now, the door remains open for both Abhishek and Sooryavanshi to stake their claim for a place in the 50-over setup in the coming years.
