In a surprising twist, South African opener Quinton de Kock was missing from the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) playing XI against KKR in the second fixture of IPL 2026. But what could be the reason behind his omission? Let’s find out.

MI, five-time IPL champions, began their IPL 2026 campaign against arch-rivals KKR at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on March 29. Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to field first.

Quinton de Kock dropped by MI for the opening IPL 2026 game

However, when the playing XI was out, fans were shocked to see Quinton de Kock was nowhere to be found. MI bought the experienced South African opener during the mini-auction for a base price of INR 1 crore.

De Kock, who recently reversed his white-ball retirement, had been in good form coming into the IPL 2026 season.

However, the Mumbai Indians had a different opinion. They chose to drop QDK for Ryan Rickelton, as the latter will open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma.

As of this writing, any injury-related news related to Quinton de Kock hasn’t come out. This means the opener has, in fact, been dropped and will not play the encounter against KKR.

QDK’s IPL experience, meanwhile, is unmatched. He has scored over 3300 runs in 115 games. Not only that, he spent three seasons with MI as well.

However, the combination issue forced him out of the MI vs KKR IPL 2026 encounter.

Suryakumar Yadav pushed into the Impact Player role

That being said, apart from Quinton de Kock, another shocker for MI fans was the omission of Suryakumar Yadav. The Indian T20I captain was slotted into the Impact Player options as the franchise is reportedly managing his workload.

Suryakumar recently led India to the T20 World Cup 2026 title and has been playing T20I series around the clock. Hence, for the first few games, he is expected to be limited as an Impact Player for MI.

Also, Rohit Sharma, who played as an Impact Player last year, will play full-time this year. His recent fitness transformation could have played a big role in this decision-making.

Apart from this, MI also dropped Deepak Chahar as Shardul Thakur was given priority due to his all-round skills.

KKR fielded a depleted squad

On the other side, KKR are seriously struggling with an injury crisis. Ajinkya Rahane lost the toss and had to bat first. However, their playing XI had a lot of gaps.

Harshit Rana and Matheesha Pathirana were unavailable due to injuries. Hence, for fast bowling duties, KKR went with Vaibhav Arora and Blessing Muzarabani.

Kartik Tyagi and Rovman Powell are a couple of options KKR may go with as Impact Player in the second innings.

Rahane did say at the toss that the pitch has some grass, which is why they wanted to bowl first as well. However, Hardik Pandya’s luck went into MI’s favour.
