In a news that left every ardent CSK fan in shock, an important marquee player from the five-time champions was ruled out of the initial IPL 2026 matches, following the footsteps of MS Dhoni.
As Dhoni is set to be ruled out for at least the first two weeks of IPL 2026, Chennai Super Kings already suffered a major setback before even beginning their journey for the ongoing edition.
To make matters worse, an overseas player, who was retained by the Yellow Army ahead of the previous mini auction, made himself unavailable for a good amount of time.
Dewald Brevis Joins MS Dhoni In CSK Injury List For IPL 2026
Swashbuckling middle-order batter from South Africa Dewald Brevis, in all likelihood, will miss the first two IPL matches for CSK, if not three. Revsportz reported the development, which came as a major setback, as hopes were high around the 22-year-old.
"Dewald Brevis is likely to miss the first two to three games due to a side strain," Revsportz posted on social media.

The news about Dewald Brevis meant the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side would miss his services on March 30, when they will face Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. After that, Gaikwad and his boys will face Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, on April 3 and April 5, respectively.
Brevis is likely to be sidelined for the CSK fixtures mentioned above.
Notably, CSK suffered injury setbacks prior to IPL 2026 as well, with their potential premier fast bowler, Nathan Ellis, ruled out for the entire tournament.
Who Will Replace Dewald Brevis In CSK Playing XI For IPL 2026?
If Brevis gets ruled out of IPL 2026, if not the initial few fixtures, CSK will have Matthew Short in their playing XI. Short can bat at the top, preferably at No. 3, with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson set to open, Short is expected to follow them.
Moreover, Short can be handy with the ball in hand as well, and his off-spin could be critical for Rajasthan Royals, who have quite a few left-handed batters in their unit.
When Did Dewald Brevis Join CSK?
Brevis joined the Super Kings in mid-IPL 2025 as a replacement for injured Gurjapneet Singh. The South African youngster took INR 2.2 crore for joining the Chennai-based franchise.
Prior to that, Brevis was part of the five-time champions Mumbai Indians since making his in 2022.
Brevis was exceptional during the U19 World Cup 2022 for South Africa. There, he aggregated 506 runs across six innings, which included a record-breaking 18 sixes in a single edition. In the process, he got past the elite record of Shikhar Dhawan, who made 505 runs in a single U19 World Cup edition, in 2004.
In Dewald Brevis’ absence, Chennai Super Kings are expected to have four overseas players in Matt Short, Noor Ahmad, Jamie Overton and Matt Henry during their IPL 2026 match against Rajasthan Royals on Monday.
