As expected, India bounced back from their drubbing at the hands of South Africa to thrash the Zimbabwe side in a one-sided T20 World Cup Super 8 game in Chennai. The Suryakumar Yadav-led side were humiliated by the Proteas on Sunday, and India’s net run-rate was badly affected.

The team needed to win their remaining matches to have any hopes of qualifying for the World Cup semifinal. However, with South Africa beating the Windies and India thrashing Zimbabwe, the equation remains simple for the Men in Blue: beat West Indies on Sunday, and qualify for the next round without worrying about the net run-rate.

Who will reach T20 WC semis if rain spoils IND Vs WI

The two sides will play a straightforward virtual quarterfinal on Sunday in Kolkata, but a question arises: what if rain plays spoilsport in that Super 8 match? Which team will qualify for the semis if the contest gets abandoned?

Both India and the West Indies have two points each, and if rain plays spoilsport on Sunday, their net run-rate could come into play to decide the second semifinalist.

India won by a huge margin of 72 runs against Zimbabwe, but despite the win, their net run-rate remains -0.100. However, the worrying part is that the West Indies’ net run-rate is better than India's (+1.791). Hence, if rain arrives on Sunday and spoils the match, the Windies will go through to the semis in terms of net run-rate.

But the good news is that, as of now, there is no rain predicted for Sunday. According to Accuweather, the average temperature on Sunday evening is going to be around 23 degrees, with zero probability of rain.

West Indies spoils their qualification chances after South Africa loss

The West Indies played their first Super 8 match against Zimbabwe, and the Men in Maroon gave a beating to the Chevrons as they won a one-sided battle, and boosted their net run-rate (+5.35). The team just needed to beat South Africa to qualify for the semis, but the side crumbled under pressure.

West Indies were put into bat and the batters surrendered as they lost 7 wickets for 83 runs. The team was staring at a low-score before Romario Shepherd, and Jason Holder resurrected the innings.

The duo put on a record-breaking partnership as the team reached a commanding 176/8. The target was supposed to be tricky, but the Proteas side made a mockery of the total. Quinton de Kock scored a quick-fire 47, and Aiden Markram stole the show (82 off 46) as the side chased down the target inside 16.1 overs.

The team now faces a must-win clash against a resurrected Indian team on Sunday at the Eden Gardens.

What happened the last time India met West Indies in T20 WC

The last time these two teams met was in the famous 2016 World Cup semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. India was put into bat, and on a flat batting wicket, the openers struggled before Virat Kohli continued his purple patch and slammed a majestic 89 off 47 balls.

His innings was laced with 11 fours and a solitary six as the star batter helped India attain a total of 192/2 in the allotted 20 overs.

In reply, the West Indies team was stretched by the Indian bowlers, but Lendl Simmons (82), and Andre Russell (43) made sure that the Indian side suffered a heartbreak as the Men in Maroon reached the World Cup finals.
