On Wednesday, March 4, New Zealand and South Africa locked horns for the first semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The Kiwis won the toss and opted to field first. The decision turned out to be gold as the Proteas got off to their worst start in this edition.

Michael Bracewell’s replacement, Cole McConchie, set the tone when he picked up two wickets in the second over of the game. Eventually, the Blackcaps reduced South Africa to 77/5. The bowlers were on point and breathing fire, leaving the batters clueless. Amid the brutal attack, Tim Seifert too dodged a bullet when he was hit on the nose following a lethal Lockie Ferguson delivery.

Tim Seifert hit on the nose by Ferguson’s Delivery

Mitchell Santner introduced Ferguson into the attack in the 4th over of the match. Meanwhile, on the last ball of his 2nd over, which was also the last ball of the powerplay, Ferguson bowled a short-pitched delivery to Aiden Markram, who was beaten by the pace.

Eventually, Tim Seifert too misjudged the line and was hit on the face. The players were worried about the keeper-opener’s well-being, and Lockie Ferguson himself signalled the physio to rush to the field. It was a tense moment as the fans worried that Seifert might have had a cut on his face.

The 31-year-old quickly jumped to his feet and ran to the opposite end, signalling that he was well. The keeper was definitely hurt but didn’t want to express his pain.

Following the blow to the head, the physios did a concussion test, where they found New Zealand keeper fit to continue keeping in the game.

Tim Seifert's presence important for New Zealand

It was a scary moment and the Kiwis fans were worried because they cannot afford to lose Seifert to injury. The right-handed batter has been one of Kiwis best better so far in the tournament.

Shedding light on Seifert's performance in T20 World Cup 2026, the star opener has 216 runs in six innings, averaging 43.20. He started the tournament with two fifty-plus scores but saw a difficult phase post that. Notably, the right-handed batter has just 62 runs in last four games.

Also, for the unversed, in case Seifert would have walked out of the field with injury, then New Zealand would have allowed to bring in a substitute because of concussion rules. It is only injury scenario at present in cricket, where the ICC allows team to make like-to-like replacement.

Devon Conway is there on the bench for  the Kiwis, but it would have been difficult to replace Seifert.

New Zealand struggle to finish innings on a positive note

As mentioned above, South Africa were reduced to 77/5 and New Zealand had a chance to close Proteas' innings with a low score. However, Marco Jansen and Tristan Stubbs stitched an unbeaten 67-run partnership to bring the Proteas back in the hunt.

At the time of writing this article, South Africa are well back in the hunt and put 144/5 runs on the board after 17.5 overs.
