Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) got off to a cracking start against Punjab Kings in match 17 of the IPL 2026 season. Abhishek Sharma plundered 74 runs from just 28 balls with five boundaries and eight huge sixes in New Chandigarh as the ‘Orange Army’ raced to 120-0 in just eight overs.
However, some tight bowling from part-timer Shashank Singh tilted the tide back in Punjab Kings’ favor in the middle overs of the innings. South African international Marco Jansen also made his presence felt on the field with a sharp boundary catch to get rid of dangerman Ishan Kishan.

Beanpole South Africa all-rounder Marco Jansen made full use of his height by snaring a sensational catch at the boundary in the 14th over of the SRH innings. With Arshdeep Singh bowling to a well-set Ishan Kishan in his return spell, the SRH wicketkeeper-batter dispatched the Punjab Kings paceman with an elegant flick off his pads.

Destined to go over the ropes for a certain six, an agile Marco Jansen came running in from deep midwicket and outstretched his wrong hand to pluck the ball out of the air. Jansen’s fielding excellence not only sent Ishan Kishan stunned and packing, but also surprised Arshdeep Singh as the speedster was seen on his haunches, with one hand over his mouth.

SRH mount 219 in 20 overs, Marco Jansen wicketless
With the ball, however, Marco Jansen endured a torrid time on the field against SRH at the Mullanpur Stadium. The speedster conceded 40 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket, as his IPL 2026 tally remains stranded at just two wickets from three innings so far.
Batting first, the SRH franchise mounted 219-6 from 20 overs, courtesy of a breathtaking 28-ball 74 from firebrand opener Abhishek Sharma. His opening partner Travis Head also minted 38 runs off 23 balls, and number four Heinrich Klaasen took 33 balls to get to 39 runs with a boundary and a six.

With the ball, Arshdeep Singh struck twice in his four-over spell, albeit at an expense of 50 runs. Part-timer Shashank Singh unfurled the spell of the high-scoring innings with figures of 2-20, getting the important wickets of both Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma in quick succession.
Punjab Kings aiming to catch up with fellow unbeaten Royals
Punjab Kings, under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, will be aiming to beat SRH in a bid to remain unbeaten in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. Moreover, a win will also extend their tally to seven points from four games, thus bringing them within touching distance of fellow-unbeaten franchise and table-toppers Rajasthan Royals on the 10-team standings.
The SRH, on the other hand, is tottering at number six on the points table with one win and two crushing defeats from three matches.
