India’s Super Eight match against Zimbabwe in the T20 World Cup 2026 produced a dramatic moment when head coach Gautam Gambhir was seen angrily speaking to Sanju Samson after his dismissal. The incident happened during the match played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on February 26.
To begin with, Zimbabwe won the toss and chose to bowl first. However, India started positively with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma opening the innings. The pair looked comfortable and gave India the kind of aggressive start they had been missing in earlier matches.
Blessing Muzarabani removes Sanju Samson
Nevertheless, the breakthrough came in the fourth over. Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani dismissed Samson for 24 runs off 15 balls. Notably, his innings included two sixes and one four, and he appeared set for a big score before the dismissal.
The wicket fell when Muzarabani cleverly bowled a slower off-cutter on a hard length. Samson moved across the stumps and attempted a pull shot toward deep mid-wicket. However, due to the lack of pace, he mistimed the shot.

Ryan Burl ran in from the boundary and completed a safe sliding catch. As a result, Samson’s promising innings ended early.
Gautam Gambhir’s animated reaction
After getting out, cameras captured Gautam Gambhir speaking to Sanju Samson in a visibly animated and intense manner at the dugout.

In a video that quickly went viral on social media, Gautam Gambhir appeared to question Samson’s shot selection. Specifically, he seemed to ask why Sanju Samson had played the risky pull toward deep mid-wicket instead of choosing a safer option.
His body language suggested frustration, as the dismissal came when Samson was looking well set.
Strong batting led by Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya
Meanwhile, despite Sanju Samson’s early exit, India produced a powerful batting display. Abhishek Sharma returned to form in style, smashing 55 runs off just 30 balls. In addition, Hardik Pandya played a sensational unbeaten half-century off 23 deliveries.
As a result, India posted their highest-ever T20 World Cup total, surpassing their previous best of 218/4 against England in 2007. The massive score put Zimbabwe under immediate pressure in the chase.
After the big total, India’s bowlers delivered an effective performance. Arshdeep Singh led the attack brilliantly, taking three wickets while defending the large target. Moreover, Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel picked up one wicket each.
However, Shivam Dube had an expensive outing despite taking a wicket, giving away 46 runs in just two overs.
Notably, Zimbabwe managed 184 for six. Brian Bennett fought hard with 97 off 59 balls, but the effort was not enough to threaten India’s total. Furthermore, the win significantly improved India’s net run rate.
After the heavy defeat to South Africa, India’s NRR had dropped to –3.800. Now, it has recovered to –0.100. Notably, South Africa have already qualified for the semifinals. Therefore, India and West Indies will compete for the remaining spot in an important match at Eden Gardens on March 1.
The qualification equation is straightforward. If India win, they reach the semifinals. However, if they lose or the match is washed out, they will be eliminated.
