Forgotten Pakistan fast bowler Akif Javed nearly injured raging Englishman Tom Moores during their Vitality T20 Blast 2026 faceoff at the County Ground in Derby. The incident occurred during a North Group match between Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire on Saturday, May 30.
Chasing 236 for a win, Nottinghamshire’s number five Moores raced to 55* off just 26 balls when he was struck on his neck by Javed’s rising delivery. Fortunately for the Notts, the uncapped English wicketkeeper-batter soon got back on his feet to resume his innings.

The blow appeared nasty and drew parallels with the fatal Phillip Hughes injury that took the life of the Australian cricketer back in late-2014.
Fortunately for Nottinghamshire and English cricket, Tom Moores got back on his feet and struck a few more boundaries and sixes to race to an electrifying 34-ball 75*.
Nottinghamshire fall short despite Tom Moores’ scorching 75*
Derbyshire batted first and mounted 234-4 in 20 overs upfront. Opening batters Aneurin Donald and Martin Andersson bludgeoned 112 runs together for the opening wicket in less than eight overs.
Captain Donald blasted 84 off those runs from just 31 balls with seven boundaries and eight huge sixes. Andersson also made 69* off 43 balls, before Wayne Madsen and Ross Whiteley slapped cracking 16-ball cameos in the backend of the innings.
In response, Nottinghamshire slipped to 42-3 in 6.3 overs before wicketkeeper-batter Tom Moores engineered an emphatic counterattack for the visitors. Batting at number five, the cricketer smeared three boundaries and seven sixes to shape an enterprising 75* off just 34 balls.
Despite the best of Moores’ efforts, Nottinghamshire reached 211-6 in 20 overs to fall 24 runs short of their target.
Akif Javed’s tight spell of 1-29 from his four overs eventually made the difference between the two sides in the high-scoring Derby evening.
Akif Javed out of Pakistan plans despite impressive T20 run
Akif Javed is yet to make his Pakistan debut in T20I and Test cricket. Moreover, the tearaway fast bowler played just three ODIs for the ‘Men in Green’, all against New Zealand back in early 2025 last year.
The speedster recently enjoyed a prolific PSL 2026 season with the ball for the Hyderabad Kingsmen franchise. Akif Javed picked up 12 wickets in the tournament in just eight innings at an impressive bowling average of 19.66.
He also delivered a tight match-winning spell for Derbyshire in their recent North Group Vitality T20 Blast 2026 game against Nottinghamshire.
As of now, it remains to be seen whether Akif Javed’s impressive performances in franchise cricket will be enough to force his way back into Pakistan’s plans ahead of their upcoming white-ball assignments.
