Digvesh Rathi, the Lucknow Super Giants spinner, who made a name for himself through some memorable wicket-taking celebrations and his infamous breach of conduct during the Indian Premier League in 2025, has once again found himself involved in a controversy, this time involving Punjab Kings opener Priyansh Arya. 

While the two players have a history stemming from the infamous on-field banter in IPL, the duo were once again involved in a heated off-field moment ahead of a Delhi Premier League 2026 match.

Priyansh Arya and Digvesh Rathi clash ahead of DPL 2026 match

Priyansh represents Outer Delhi Warriors in DPL 2026, while Digvesh Rathi plays for Purani Dilli-6. Ahead of their all-important Eliminator match on August 26, the players were found engaging in a heated conversation with each other during the pre-match training session.

A video going viral on the internet captured Digvesh practising on his side of the ground as Priyansh Arya crossed him while walking back towards the dugout. 

As Arya walked past Rathi, the spinner was seen nodding his head animatedly and saying something to the batter, which appeared to be a warning. Arya immediately responded with a few words while continuing to walk towards the dugout.

The whole conversation appeared quite animated and seemed to carry some tension, although nothing can be confirmed about what was said or either player's intentions.

Both Rathi and Arya come out brilliant on the field

In the match, however, Rathi was punished by Arya in the only over he bowled to him. Priyansh slammed Rathi for a maximum off the second ball of the 11th over and followed it up with a boundary off the very next delivery. Rathi bowled a 97 km/h delivery, after which Arya came down the wicket and hammered the ball past the right side of the bowler.

Priyansh eventually smashed seven boundaries and three sixes before being dismissed by Dev Lakra in the 12th over. Digvesh Rathi's performance with the ball was impressive as well, as he picked up two wickets from his four overs, although he conceded runs at an expensive economy rate of 9.00.

What is the backdrop of feud between Priyansh and Rathi?

For the uninitiated, the first controversy between Priyansh Arya and Rathi originated during IPL 2025 when LSG faced Punjab Kings. 

After Rathi dismissed Arya, he ran towards the batter and aggressively performed his trademark notebook celebration, mimicking the act of writing Arya's name down before crossing it out. 

The BCCI subsequently deemed the gesture a breach of the IPL Code of Conduct and fined Rathi 25% of his match fee.

In DPL 2026, the rivalry sparked again midway through the tournament when Outer Delhi Warriors and Purani Delhi faced each other. Rathi dismissed Arya and deliberately ran directly in front of him before performing his trademark celebration. 

Although Rathi's celebration was aggressive, Arya did not react and handled the situation gracefully, walking back towards the dugout without responding. However, the gesture once again triggered immense buzz on social media.

Nevertheless, Rathi has previously revealed that he and Priyansh Arya are close friends. According to the spinner, the two had a pre-match pact during IPL 2025 to celebrate if either of them got the better of the other. However, the authorities still penalised Rathi for the on-field gesture, irrespective of the understanding between the two players.

How have Priyansh Arya and Digvesh Rathi been doing in DPL 2026 so far?

So far in the Delhi Premier League, Priyansh has not been at his most productive. He has averaged 21.40 from 10 innings while maintaining a decent strike rate of 163.36. He has managed only one half-century in DPL 2026 so far.

Digvesh Rathi's performance has also been on the colder side. Of the 10 innings in which he has bowled, he has remained wicketless on five occasions. In the remaining five matches, he has taken a total of 10 wickets at an economy rate of 8.01 and a strike rate of 21.00.
