Devon Conway continues to remain on the sidelines for the New Zealand team in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The prolific left-handed opener even failed to make it to the New Zealand XI in their latest Group D match against South Africa on February 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

While Devon Conway did not play against South Africa, he “certainly” made a loud impact beyond the boundary, at least for teammate Ish Sodhi. During the 17th over of the South African innings, Sodhi was spotted hilariously ‘shaming’ Conway on live television for ‘polluting the air’.

In a hysterical footage captured on live TV, senior New Zealand players Devon Conway and Ish Sodhi were spotted interacting with each other in the dugout during their team’s crucial Group D match against South Africa in Ahmedabad on February 14.

During the 17th over of the South African innings, Sodhi hilariously accused Conway of ‘farting’ before running away from the opening batter.

Why is Devon Conway not playing for New Zealand?

Since the conclusion of New Zealand’s five-match T20I series in India last month, Conway has not been picked in either of his side’s three Group D matches of the T20 World Cup 2026. The only match of the tournament he has played so far was a mere warm-up affair against the USA in Navi Mumbai roughly a couple of weeks ago.

While the 34-year-old failed to make it to New Zealand’s playing XI against Afghanistan on February 8 owing to illness, he was likely left out of the South Africa match due to tactical reasons and team balance.

A veteran of 66 T20Is, Devon Conway recently underwent a below par series against Team India. In four innings, the cricketer managed to aggregate just 64 runs at a dismal average of 16, and clubbed 44 of them in a single match in Vizag on January 28.

Nonetheless, Conway remains one of the most exuberant and prolific batters in New Zealand’s current T20 World Cup 2026 line-up, with a career haul of 1,739 runs at 35.48 with a T20I strike rate of nearly 130.

New Zealand all but confirmed for Super Eights

The New Zealand team started off its T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a couple of confident wins. The ‘Black Caps’ overcame Afghanistan’s insurgence by five wickets in Chennai on February 8, before crushing a hapless UAE side by 10 wickets in a one-sided run chase at the same venue.

In the match against South Africa, New Zealand batted first and charted 175-7 in 20 overs. Mark Chapman top-scored in the innings with a fiery 26-ball 48. Later, bowlers failed to contain Aiden Markram’s 86*-run rampage as New Zealand lost the match by seven wickets.

Regardless of their defeat, New Zealand is placed second on the Group D points table with two wins in three games. They will now face a winless Canada side on February 17.
