The India Under-19 side seems to be in deep trouble against their arch-rivals, Pakistan, as the young brigade has already lost five wickets and are yet to breach the 100-run mark. All eyes were on young Aaryavir Sehwag, the son of great Virender Sehwag, but he, too, faltered against Pakistan.
On a tricky wicket at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground, the Pakistan bowlers tightened the screws on the scoring rate, and the Men in Green were overjoyed as spinner Niqab Shafiq gave a fiery send-off to Sehwag, who was dismissed trying to clear the ropes.
Sehwag given fiery send-off after early dismissal in Under-19 match
The Indian side struggled for runs as they had lost three wickets for just 22 runs. The onus was on Aaryavir to steer the Indian innings to a respectable total, but the right-handed batter failed to deliver the goods and was dismissed for 22 off 40.
In the 17th over, Shafiq bowled a tossed-up delivery as Aaryavir aimed to clear the leg-side field. He went for a slog sweep, but failed to get the desired connection, as the fielder at deep square leg took a sharp catch to send him packing.
Pakistan realised the importance of the wicket as Shafiq, the one who dismissed him, was overjoyed as he gave a fiery send-off to the Indian opener after taking his wicket. The bowler signalled him to go back to the pavilion as the Men in Green celebrated.
Aaryavir Sehwag had the chance to replicate his father's performance against Pakistan
The young Sehwag had the chance to replicate his father’s performances against Pakistan, but he failed to deliver the goods. For context, Virender Sehwag’s best performances came against the arch-rivals, Pakistan, especially in red-ball cricket.
In ODIs, he has 1071 runs against them, with an impressive strike rate of 102. However, it is in red-ball cricket that he has truly dominated the proceedings against them.
In 9 Tests, he had accumulated 1276 runs, with an average of 91, and it also includes a stellar triple hundred in the 2004 series.
Hence, there was a weight of expectations on Aaryavir, but he couldn’t replicate the same performance as the youngster was sent packing for a struggling 22.
