VVS Laxman is set to be handed a special role within the Indian cricket team support staff by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The legendary Indian batter is already helming the BCCI CoE in Bengaluru.
As per reports, Laxman’s responsibilities under the new BCCI role range from working with the coaching staff and the selection committee, as well as reducing the communication gap between Indian players and selectors.
Role of VVS Laxman with Indian team revealed
A few days ago, several reports indicated that the BCCI has carved out a separate position just to include VVS Laxman in Indian cricket’s daily affairs. While fans speculated that Laxman was considered as Team India’s head coach as a replacement of underfire Gautam Gambhir, other rumours claimed that the former cricketer will become the new Director of Cricket at the BCCI.
As reported by Indranil Basu from CricBlogger, one of the primary tasks of VVS Laxman will be to bring stability to the Indian dressing room under his new yet-to-be-confirmed role.

The report also stated that the 51-year-old will be working closely with Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir as well as with India’s chief selector and fellow former cricketer Ajit Agarkar.
Laxman will also be required to reduce the communication gap between members of the Indian selection committee and Indian players.
VVS Laxman already serving as India’s interim coach
VVS Laxman has previously served as head coach of the India U19 and India A cricket teams. Moreover, the former Indian batter even serves as head coach of the national side on an interim basis, whenever primary coach Gautam Gambhir is on leave of absence.
For instance, Laxman coached the Indian cricket team in their recently-concluded T20I series in Zimbabwe.
Laxman to hold unique post with BCCI
With several reports indicating a special role being assigned to VVS Laxman in Indian cricket, the BCCI is expected to make an official announcement soon.
As of now, he is serving as the head of cricket at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, where the cricketer performs mentorship and works on the physical aspect for the players. The legendary Indian batter was appointed to the role way back in 2021.
It now appears that Laxman will be named as the new Director of Cricket by the Indian board. In such a scenario, he will become the go-to man for the board in any cricket-related discussion.
Moreover, he will also call the shots on all cricketing decision, even women’s cricket in the country.
Previously, it was fellow former cricketer Ravi Shastri who wielded a similar role, which required the veteran to supervise then Indian head coach Duncan Fletcher as well as the rest of the coaching staff.
With his wealth of experience and understanding of Indian cricket, Laxman’s new role could prove crucial in ensuring greater coordination and stability across the national setup.
