Vaibhav Sooryavanshi attended his first net session with Team India on the eve of the Ireland series. The 15-year-old is on the verge of becoming the youngest ever cricketer, male or female, to play for India.
The legendary Sachin Tendulkar, at 16 years and 205 days, holds the record as the youngest Indian male cricketer. While Shefali Varma (15 y 239 d) is the youngest Indian cricketer.
However, Sooryavanshi at 15 years and 90 days can overtake both Tendulkar and Varma, if he plays his debut in the first IRE vs IND T20I.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may play over Abhishek Sharma in IRE vs IND 1st T20I
During the nets on the IRE vs IND tour, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was seen sweating it hard while batting in the open nets, along with Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan.
The current Indian T20I team has a settled top three with Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan slotted in. However, the footage coming in from Belfast suggests that the 15-year-old may get a nod ahead of Sharma.
Sooryavanshi was seen batting over his senior pro in the nets, while the Punjab batter only batted after all other batters, as reported by renowned journalist Subhayan Chakraborty. Thus, it is all but confirmed that the teenager will open the innings along with Samson in the IRE vs IND 1st T20I.
Meanwhile, the stylish left-handed Abhishek Sharma was a part of the 2026 T20 World Cup-winning India line-up, although he didn't have the greatest of the campaigns.
Sharma could only score two half-centuries in the entire tournament, but notched a 21-ball 52 against New Zealand in final. However, he did remarkably well in the IPL 2026, hitting 563 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of 205.
India batting coach on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's debut
Although when asked about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's India debut, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak didn't gave any hints on the eve of the first T20I between Ireland and India. However, he mentioned that captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir will decide after the net sessions.
"Shreyas (Iyer) & Gautam Gambhir will decide the XI in the evening (after the nets)," Sitanshu Kotak said in the pre-match press-conference as quoted by journalist Ankan Kar.
From IPL 2026 to India call up- Fabulous life of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's stocks touched the heights of the sky during the recently concluded IPL 2026. Not only was he stupendous during the tournament, but he also punished the world beaters like Jasprit Bumrah, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Sunil Narine, and Kagiso Rabada without breaking a sweat.
The swashbuckler ended the season with 776 runs in 16 innings at a whopping strike rate of 237.31. His wonders for RR almost took them to the IPL 2026 final, but they lost to the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2. However, he slapped back-to-back 90s in the playoffs against SRH and GT.
Later, he was fast-tracked to the India A set-up to play the Tri-Nation A series in Sri Lanka, where Sooryavanshi scored a match-winning 94 off 29 balls in the final as he broke multiple records.
If the Bihar batter doesn’t make his debut in the 1st T20I between IRE vs IND, he will get there sooner or later, as the southpaw has also been named in the squads for the England T20Is and Asian Games 2026.
