Sooryavanshi weakness exposed in IND A Vs AFG A match [Source: AFP]
At just 15, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has the world at his feet as the teenager continues to dazzle with his breathtaking batting displays. In IPL 2025, the youngster left a lasting impression, and the trend continued in the recently concluded season as Sooryavanshi became the talk of the town, for all good reasons.
It won’t be an understatement to say that at just 15, Sooryavanshi carried Rajasthan Royals’ batting lineup in the IPL, and was single-handedly responsible for taking his team to the playoffs. As a result of his exploits, the youngster was drafted into the India A squad for the Sri Lanka tri-series, and was also roped into the T20I side for the UK tour.
In the first match of the tri-series against Sri Lanka, Sooryavanshi failed to deliver the goods, but he responded back in style with a brilliant knock against Afghanistan A. However, in the same match, Sooryavanshi’s lone weakness was exposed by the opponent.
Sooryavanshi dazzles against Afghanistan after Sri Lanka failure
In the opening match of the tri-series against Sri Lanka A, there were a lot of expectations from the Indian opener, but he crumbled under pressure and was dismissed cheaply as fans ridiculed him for one failure.
However, as Sooryavanshi often does, he silenced his critics in the following game, and took down the Afghan attack with ease. India were put into bat on a sticky wicket, and Sooryavanshi decided to unleash his best as he punished the Afghanistan A bowlers with an array of strokes.
Interestingly, he didn’t even hit a single six, and despite that, Sooryavanshi managed to score a quickfire 44 off 22 balls, laced with 9 fours, and a strike-rate of 200. He laid the foundation for the middle-order batters as Prabhsimran Singh took over once he was dismissed.
Afghanistan exposes Sooryavanshi's weakness
Afghanistan bowler, Abdullah Ahmadzai, bowled a short of a length ball just outside the off as Sooryavanshi tried to ramp the ball, but he got a thick outside-edge due to the extra bounce, and the keeper took a sharp catch.
These were the same lines and lengths and the delivery that the Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers tried against him in the league stage match, and in the Eliminator as well. In the league stage, SRH pacer Praful Hinge surprised Sooryavanshi with a short of a length ball as the batter miscued his pull-shot, and was caught out.
Ahmadzai was taken to the cleaners by the India A opener, but he persisted with the lines and lengths as he came around the wicket, cramped Sooryavanshi for room, and made him play a false shot. In the future, the opposition bowlers could try and dismiss the 15-year-old in the same fashion.
Sooryavanshi, not a one-trick pony in ODIs
In the tri-series ODI match against Afghanistan, Sooryavanshi didn’t hit a six, and yet, he had a strike-rate of 200, showcasing his ability to play a different ball game altogether. The Afghanistan bowlers were trying to cramp him for room, and the Indian opener waited for the ball as numerous times, he pierced the gap on the off side.
His knock wasn’t only about big hits, but it showcased that Sooryavanshi was patient enough to wait for the bad balls, and he was also able to find the gaps at will.
He played each ball to its merit, and in the early days, but the teenager looks ready to dominate the ODI format as well.
