On Tuesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a cash reward of Rs. 131 crore for the Indian cricket team that won the T20 World Cup 2026 at home. 

The Suryakumar Yadav-led squad won eight out of nine matches and dominated in the final, where they handed New Zealand a 96-run defeat in front of 90,000 fans in Ahmedabad. 

Although the apex council of cricket in India has not yet clarified the exact amount which is set to be distributed among the players, support staff, and the selectors. However, in this matter, it is worth noting that the BCCI follows a hierarchy. While players get the biggest share, the head coach Gautam Gambhir and the coaching staff will get the second-highest share.

Notably, the BCCI also oversees the selectors, and a portion of the bonus prize goes to the Indian selection committee, along with the physios and backroom staff. 

BCCI keeps the tradition of showering champs with hefty cash bonuses alive

The ₹131 crore cash bonus keeps alive the tradition of the BCCI rewarding title-winning campaigns. Here’s how much the 2007 winners and the 2024 T20 World Cup champions received from the apex body of cricket. 

  1. The MS Dhoni-led winners of the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, later renamed the T20 World Cup, were rewarded with US$ 3 million (approximately ₹12 crore at the time). The then BCCI president, Sharad Pawar, also announced a ₹1 crore bonus prize for Yuvraj Singh for hitting 6 sixes in an over for the first time in the history of cricket. Meanwhile, each of the team’s support staff was also rewarded Rs 15 lakh [US$ 38,000] for their efforts. 
  2. The BCCI awarded a massive bonus of INR 125 crore (approx. USD 15 million) to the T20 World Cup winners. The former board secretary Jay Shah made the announcement in a post on X, a day after India won a thrilling final against South Africa by seven runs in Barbados.

It is worth noting that the apex body of cricket in India, BCCI, prize money for T20 World Cup winners has seen an exponential increase for the winners over the years. Rising from a modest ₹12 crore reward in 2007 to an unprecedented ₹131 crore in 2026. 

Following the 2024 victory, the board awarded ₹125 crore, which grew upto ₹131 crore in 2026.

The 2026 bonus cash prize celebrates a 1091.67% increase from the prize for the inaugural winners.
