A dramatic Super Over defeat for India A against Sri Lanka A on June 15 ended with an ugly on-field scuffle. Fifteen-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, frustrated after failing to chase 17 runs, shoved Sri Lanka’s Vishen Halambage when the fielder taunted him to “go home.”
Match officials fined both players. Days later, former Sri Lanka captain Anura Tennakoon, who had travelled to Dambulla to watch Sooryavanshi bat, shared a remarkable post-script.
The legend revealed that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi approached him to show an unforeseen gesture and made a humble request no Sri Lankan player had ever made to him.
The Ugly Fight Between Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sri Lanka Players
The tri-nation A-series match in Dambulla was played on a knife-edge. Both sides finished on 265, forcing a Super Over after India A captain Tilak Varma argued at length with umpires about the fading light.
Sri Lanka A set a target of 17 runs, and slinger Kugathas Mathulan kept things tight. Sooryavanshi could only bag nine runs, and India A fell short.
Walking back to the pavilion, a visibly frustrated Sooryavanshi was met with stinging words. Vishen Halambage taunted him, saying, “Match over… now you go home.” Other Sri Lankan fielders joined in, calling the youngster a “small kid.”
Sooryavanshi Charges At Sri Lankan Player
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi turned, charged at the group, and shoved Halambage. The situation nearly erupted into a full brawl. Wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella and India’s Suryansh Shedge rushed in to separate them.
Match Referee Pradeep Jeyapragash handed out sanctions after reviewing umpire reports. Halambage received a 50% match fee fine for provoking the incident.
Sooryavanshi faced an identical 50% fine for making physical contact. Tilak Varma was docked 30% for his prolonged argument with officials, while Dickwella lost 20% for excessive appealing earlier in the match, even though he helped calm the clash.

What Anura Tennakoon Revealed About Sooryavanshi
Sri Lankan batting great Anura Tennakoon was present in Dambulla specifically to watch the young Indian he had admired during IPL 2026. He later shared his experience, including the touching moment that followed the unsavoury scenes.
“I was impressed by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s performances in this year’s IPL, so I made the trip specifically to watch him bat. Unfortunately, he couldn’t deliver the same magic on the day,” Tennakoon said.
“Our players wound him up. As a young kid, he was already frustrated and couldn’t control his emotions, leading to the unfortunate incident where he pulled out players. Both sides share the blame.
What truly stood out was his humility: He approached me and said, ‘Sir, I need only your wishes. I’ll be very lucky to receive one from you’ – then touched my legs. Our own players have never sought blessings from me in that manner.”
The gesture left a lasting impression on Tennakoon, which underlines the respect Sooryavanshi carries for the game’s elders despite the intense pressure he faced from his rival team.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Looking Forward After a Poor Tri-Series
Sooryavanshi’s numbers in the tri-series were modest. Across four innings, he scored 117 runs at an average of 29.25 and a strike rate of 153.95.
His scores read 14, 44, 21, and 38. While he could not replicate his IPL heroics, the explosive tempo of his innings kept fans tuning in whenever he walked out to bat.
The teenager now has a chance to reset quickly. After the Afghanistan ODIs, the India A caravan shifts to a senior UK tour. Sooryavanshi has earned his maiden senior India call-up for a two-match T20I series against Ireland, starting June 26 in Belfast.
The selection marks a significant milestone for the 15-year-old, and excitement around his potential debut is immense.
