The unexpected move comes at a time when Sunrisers Hyderabad are preparing for the playoffs after enjoying a strong league stage campaign. The player has reportedly been released by the franchise ahead of the knockout stage due to national duty commitments.

Kamindu Mendis has been released from the Sunrisers Hyderabad squad ahead of IPL 2026 playoffs due to national duty commitments. According to Sri Lankan journalist Daunshka Aravinda, Kamindu has already joined the Sri Lanka squad for the upcoming all-format tour against the West Indies.
Sri Lanka’s tour of the Caribbean will begin with a three-match ODI series from June 3 at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica. Kamindu Mendis has also been named vice-captain alongside the new Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis in both white-ball formats.
Following the ODI series, Sri Lanka and the West Indies will also play a three-match T20I series in Jamaica. The tour will later conclude with two Test matches scheduled to take place at North Sound in Antigua.

Kamindu Mendis IPL 2026 performance
Coming into IPL 2026 after an impressive T20 World Cup campaign with Sri Lanka, Kamindu Mendis was expected to play an important role for Sunrisers Hyderabad during the tournament with his all-round abilities and recent form.
Despite carrying strong momentum from the T20 World Cup 2026, Kamindu Mendis failed to break into the playing XI for Sunrisers Hyderabad this season. The Sri Lankan all-rounder eventually ended IPL 2026 without featuring in a single match for the franchise.
