Sri Lanka Cricket has entered a new phase after major administrative changes took place within the board recently. The latest development now signals the beginning of structural reforms as authorities look to bring more stability and transparency into cricket operations.

Following the leadership shake-up, a key decision has already been made regarding the future functioning of Sri Lanka Cricket. The move comes at an important time with several international assignments and domestic tournaments approaching in the coming months.

Sri Lanka Cricket names new selection committee after board changes

After the recent administrative changes in Sri Lanka Cricket, Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage approved a new selection committee following a request made by the cricket board earlier this week.

Former Sri Lankan cricketer Kapila Wijegunawardena has been appointed as the chairman of the committee. Amal Silva, Brendon Kuruppu, Waruna Waragoda and Vanessa De Silva are the other members included in the panel.

The new committee is expected to handle important selection decisions for Sri Lanka Cricket in the coming months. According to the Ministry, the aim behind these appointments is to bring more transparency and better functioning in the player selection process.

Government-backed transition begins after Sri Lanka Cricket board resignation

The recent resignation of Shammi Silva and other officials from Sri Lanka Cricket marked a major turning point in Sri Lanka cricket administration. The decision came after growing pressure from the government for a complete leadership change.

Following the resignations, discussions began around an interim administration working under government control to manage cricket operations during the transition period. The authorities are also believed to be coordinating with ICC to avoid governance-related complications.

The appointment of the new selection committee now appears to be one of the first major decisions under this changing structure. It signals that the new administration has already started making important changes as Sri Lanka Cricket enters a fresh phase with next one big series coming against India.

Sri Lanka Cricket faces uncertain period despite administrative changes

Sri Lanka Cricket is currently going through a difficult phase both on and off the field. While the team’s recent performances, especially in T20 World Cup 2026, have disappointed fans, the latest administrative changes have also created fresh uncertainty around the board’s future.

The government-backed transition has already attracted attention from the global cricketing body because ICC rules do not allow direct political interference in cricket administration. ICC deputy chairman Imran Khwaja reportedly travelled to Sri Lanka to inspect the ongoing developments closely.

Sri Lanka Cricket had earlier faced suspension in 2023 over similar governance issues, while ICC had also frozen payments in 2015 after an interim committee was formed. The newly appointed selection committee may now offer the first glimpse into how the new administration plans to run Sri Lanka cricket moving forward.
