India’s preparations for the New Zealand tour are in full swing, with the two-match Test series holding significant importance. Captain Shubman Gill is taking an extra step to prepare for the red-ball challenge.
Gill is set to travel to New Zealand with personal net bowlers for specialized batting practice ahead of the Test series, with the Indian captain also paying for their travel and accommodation himself.
Shubman Gill Takes Never-Seen-Before Step Ahead Of New Zealand Tests
India are touring New Zealand for five T20Is, five ODIs and two Test matches in October-November. The two-match Test series will begin on November 19 at Basin Reserve in Wellington.
The preparations for the Test series have gained momentum, with India announcing their Test squad on Friday, October 16. With just over a month remaining, captain Shubman Gill is taking a special step to prepare for the challenge.
As reported by PTI’s Kushan Sarkar on X, Gill is set to take four to five personal net bowlers to New Zealand for batting practice. The Indian captain will also pay for their travel and accommodation himself to prepare for the upcoming Test series.
Taking net bowlers overseas at his own expense would be a rare move, if not the first by an Indian Test captain. The two-match Test series against New Zealand holds significant importance for India, with the WTC final also in sight.
Shubman Gill To Fly To New Zealand A Month Early For Test Preparation
Shubman Gill is reportedly set to leave for New Zealand on October 23 or 24, nearly a month before the first Test. Before his departure, he will play Punjab’s Ranji Trophy match against Chhattisgarh in New Chandigarh from October 18 to 21.
Gill will then fly to New Zealand with his personal net bowlers after the Ranji Trophy match. Not part of India A’s three unofficial Tests against New Zealand A, Gill will focus on batting practice and adapting to local conditions.
Gill will also lead India in the first three ODIs against New Zealand, beginning November 4, before missing the final two matches to focus on Test preparations, with Shreyas Iyer taking over the captaincy.
