Punjab Get Major Boost as Shubman Gill Returns for Ranji Trophy 2nd Round
Punjab, who collected three points from their drawn opening-round clash against Assam in the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy, have received a major boost with Shubman Gill available for selection in the second round against Chhattisgarh.
According to The Times of India’s Sahil Malhotra, Gill is set to feature in Punjab’s second home game of the season as preparation for the upcoming New Zealand tour, having missed their opening fixture against Assam.
Gill has played 14 first-class matches for Punjab, scoring 1,296 runs at an average of 58.90, including five centuries and five half-centuries. His availability is a significant gain for Punjab early in the season.
When Did Shubman Gill Last Play for Punjab in Ranji Trophy?
Shubman Gill last played for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy on January 22, 2026, during the 2025-26 season. He featured in an away fixture against Saurashtra in Rajkot, but endured a disappointing outing.
Gill managed a two-ball duck in the first innings before scoring just 14 runs in the second in his last match for Punjab in Ranji Trophy. Punjab eventually suffered a heavy 194-run defeat, with Gill leading the side as captain.
Notably, this will be Gill’s first Ranji Trophy match at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh. He previously played a Test there in June, scoring a magnificent 126 in India’s only innings against Afghanistan.
