India have announced their ODI squad for the upcoming New Zealand tour. The Men in Blue are set to play a five-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting November 4 in Auckland, featuring two different captains across the series.

Shubman Gill will lead India in the first three ODIs, while Shreyas Iyer will captain the side in the final two matches as the players selected for the two-match Test series begin their red-ball preparations.

The reason behind India naming two different captains in India's ODI squad for the New Zealand ODI series is the upcoming two-match Test series against the same opposition, which begins on November 19, four days after the ODI series concludes.

Shubman Gill, who is India's Test captain, will begin his preparations for the upcoming two-match Test series after the first three ODIs. With Gill missing the final two matches, Shreyas Iyer will take charge of the ODI side.

Alongside Gill, the following players will be unavailable for the fourth and fifth ODIs against New Zealand, while four players have been added to the squad for the final two matches.

  • Players missing the 4th and 5th ODIs - Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Anshul Kamboj and Prasidh Krishna.
  • Players added for the 4th and 5th ODIs - Tilak Varma, Auqib Nabi, Kumar Kushagra and Yash Thakur.

Why Yashasvi Jaiswal Is Not Part Of India’s ODI Squad For New Zealand Series

Yashasvi Jaiswal is a notable exclusion from India’s ODI squad for the New Zealand series, having previously been part of the setup. However, the left-handed opener has not been dropped from the team.

Instead, Jaiswal will represent India A in three unofficial Tests against New Zealand A, beginning on October 24. The third match starts on November 7, overlapping with the ODI series starting November 4.

Jaiswal will not join the ODI squad for the 4th and 5th ODI for the same reason as Shubman Gill. Having been named in India's Test squad for the two-match series against New Zealand, Jaiswal is expected to focus on red-ball preparations after his India A assignments.
