Shubman Gill challenges Daryl Mitchell; Kohli, Rohit's position unchanged
Indian captain Shubman Gill had an outstanding start to the ODI series against England, as he played a match-winning knock in the opening encounter at Edgbaston. Chasing 259, India lost the crucial wickets of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in quick succession.
However, Shubman Gill formed a steady stand with Shreyas Iyer, scoring 80 runs off just 75 deliveries before getting retired hurt. The stylish batter's flamboyant innings helped him earn 12 rating points in the ICC rankings.
Although Shubman Gill still remains the second-ranked ODI batter, he needs only 12 more points to dethrone Mitchell from the number one spot.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's poor outings at Edgbaston didn't have any adverse effect on their positions in the ICC ODI rankings. Kohli retained the third spot with 757 points, followed by Rohit, who has 744 points under his belt.
