Team India won the first match of the England tour at Edgbaston on Tuesday evening. Although the game was about performances from Axar Patel, Shubman Gill, and Washington Sundar, former Indian captain MS Dhoni also had his moment in the limelight as he was present at the stadium.

Dhoni and his wife, Sakshi Dhoni, were seen enjoying India’s victory in Birmingham. As the legendary cricketer was in attendance, the broadcasters had a big-cheque day, with the cameras panning towards the VIP box time and again.

However, the former Indian wicketkeeper was seen wearing a device in his ear, leaving many cricket fans confused and intrigued. In this article, we will let you know all you need to know about the gadget MS Dhoni was seen wearing during the IND vs ENG 1st ODI at Edgbaston on Tuesday.

What is MS Dhoni wearing in IND vs ENG 1st ODI?

During the first innings of the IND vs ENG 1st ODI, MS Dhoni was seen wearing a lesser-known device, at least to the Indian audience, on his right ear.

As the legendary cricketer was enjoying India demolishing England with the bat, he was also hearing the radio commentary via a miniature radio set, which has a limited signal strength to the stadium or playing area.

The miniature radio set is known as the radio earwig, with a 20-hour battery life and is estimated to cost £20.00 in England. Many iconic stadiums in the country, including Lord's, sell these audio gadgets to help supporters get even closer to the game.

The radio earwig is a known device used by journalists and audiences to keep a tap on live games. Apart from cricket, it is widely used in sports such as horse racing, rugby, and Formula 1.

Prominent cricketers using radio earwig during live matches

As MS Dhoni was seen wearing the radio earpiece, a lot of impressions have gathered on social media ever since. However, the CSK star is not the first cricketer to enjoy live commentary via a miniature radio.

Last year, during India's Test tour of England, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj wore earpieces live while sitting in the team dressing rooms. Kuldeep Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin and KL Rahul have also made waves by listening to the match on the wireless radio earwigs in the past.

Is radio earwig used in cricket matches in India?

Unfortunately, the radio earwigs are not used/ available during cricket matches in India. In cricket, it is used during matches in England, as radio broadcasts are widely popular in the country.

Meanwhile, in India, the radio broadcast is neither widely followed nor popularised by the Indian board. However, radio broadcasting was a mainstay during the recently concluded 2026 T20 World Cup held in India.

That said, cricket broadcasting/ commentary through radio is still highly successful in countries such as England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
