Punjab Kings won the toss and asked Chennai Super Kings to bat first at their home ground Chepauk. CSK, batting first, put 209 runs on the board. PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer was left frustrated as the Super Kings put a big total.
CSK lost an early wicket but Ayush Mhatre's 73 run knock laid the foundation. Eventually, Sarfaraz Khan and Shivam Dube helped CSK put 201 runs on the board. It was indeed an frustrating watch for Shreyas Iyer because he violated major IPL rule for the second time in a row.
BCCI To Punish Shreyas Iyer For Slow Over-Rate
For the unversed, Punjab Kings took 2 hours to completer their overs. The match started at 7:30 pm IST and the first innings got over at 9:30 pm. Notably, after the 18th over, umpire signalled for extra player to be brought back in the circle.
Punjab's slow over-rate will come down heavy on Shreyas Iyer as the BCCI will heavily punish PBKS captain for a second straight offence. The right-handed batter also violated the IPL rule in Punjab Kings' first match against Gujarat Titans.

Following the GT vs PBKS game, IPL issued an official update, slapping a fine on Shreyas Iyer. The PBKS captain was fined Rs 12 lakhs because his team maintained a slow over-rate during the match.
"As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences," statement released by the IPL read.
Will Shreyas Iyer Be Banned? IPL Rules Explained
Had this incident happened a few years ago, Shreyas Iyer would have defenitely been banned. However, at present, for a second-straight slow over-rate offense, Shreyas Iyer will have to pay 24 lakhs in fine. The official announcement is expected to be made a day after the CSK vs PBKS match.
According to the new IPL rules, if a captain violates over-rate rules for the second time in a season, they are fined 24 lakh rupees. Here are IPL's rules regarding the same.
According to the existing rule, the captain of the bowling team will be handed penalties and in-field restrictions, but can't be banned from IPL matches for a slow over-rate offence. Therefore, Shreyas Iyer won't be banned.
From IPL 2025 onwards, slow over-rate offenses result in strict fines and in-game penalties, eliminating player suspensions. The captain faces a ₹12 lakh fine for the first offense, ₹24 lakh for the second, and ₹30 lakh for subsequent offenses. Additional in-game penalties involve restricting the team to only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle for the remaining overs.
Shreyas Iyer Off To Nervy Start IPL 2026
Shreyas Iyer is yet to click in IPL 2026. In the first match against Gujarat Titans, Iyer scored 18 (11). One major reason behind his dismissal was the injury scare he sustained in the same game.
Shreyas Iyer was hit on the hand, following which he was in deep pain. There were doubts that he might miss the CSK match, but the right-handed batter recovered in time.
