Punjab Kings’ unbeaten run in the IPL 2026 season came to an end after a high-scoring thriller against Rajasthan Royals on April 28 at the New Chandigarh Stadium in Mullanpur. Led by Shreyas Iyer, Punjab Kings entered the contest in strong form but were handed their first defeat of the campaign as Rajasthan chased down a daunting target.
The match turned into a batting spectacle, with both teams showcasing aggressive intent, but it was Rajasthan who held their nerve in the end.
Donovan Ferreira's heroics guide RR to victory
Chasing a massive total of 222, Rajasthan Royals produced a remarkable batting display. The innings was anchored by a powerful knock from Donovan Ferreira, who smashed an unbeaten 52 off just 26 balls at a strike rate of 200.00.
Rajasthan got off to a flying start with Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring 51 off 27 deliveries, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also contributed with a quickfire 43 off just 16 balls. Their aggressive approach set the tone early in the chase.

However, the match was truly decided in the latter half, when Donovan Ferreira and Shubham Dubey stitched together a match-winning 77-run partnership.
Earlier in the match, Punjab Kings had posted an imposing 222/4, powered by explosive batting from Marcus Stoinis and Prabhsimran Singh.
Stoinis’ unbeaten 62 off just 22 balls, including a late blitz where he hammered 24 runs off the final five deliveries, gave PBKS a strong finish.
PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer points to bowling lapses
After the defeat, captain Shreyas Iyer acknowledged that the loss was largely due to shortcomings in the bowling department. While he praised his team's batting effort on what he described as a slow, tacky pitch, he admitted the bowlers failed to execute their plans effectively.
Shreyas Iyer revealed that the strategy was to rely on slower deliveries, pace variations, and yorkers, but the execution fell short under pressure.
Despite the setback, Shreyas Iyer maintained a positive outlook, calling the defeat a learning experience. He highlighted that Punjab Kings have successfully handled similar high-scoring situations earlier in the tournament and insisted that this result should be treated as just an off day.
“I think we fell a bit short in our bowling, in terms of execution. We had planned to bowl a lot of slower ones, pace off, yorkers. I think we fell a bit short over there.” Shreyas Iyer said.
Did Punjab Kings let it slip?
Punjab Kings did have moments where they appeared to be in control, particularly during the middle overs. The spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Harpreet Brar tried to apply pressure on Rajasthan's batting lineup.
However, the inability to maintain consistent pressure and pick up timely wickets allowed Rajasthan to recover. The turning point came when Ferreira and Dubey counterattacked in the death overs, capitalising on loose deliveries and sealing the game.
The rest of the PBKS bowlers failed to maintain pressure and were very expensive. Punjab frontline bowler Arshdeep Singh was expensive in his 4 overs as he conceded 68 runs at an economy rate of 17.00.
Along with him, Lockie Ferguson also failed to maintain his line and length and was also expensive, leaking 57 runs in four matches at an economy rate of 14.25.
South Africa all-rounder Marco Jansen was also expensive, giving away 41 runs in 3.2 overs.
Who will PBKS face next?
Looking ahead, Punjab Kings will aim to bounce back quickly as they prepare to face Gujarat Titans in their next fixture.
The match is scheduled to take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 3.
