Sanju Samson stormed back into India’s playing XI with a cracking top-order cameo against Zimbabwe. Enthralling the Chennai crowd at the Chepauk Stadium, Samson’s appearance also marked his first at the iconic venue ever since he was traded to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise for the upcoming IPL 2026 season.
The 31-year-old expressed his delight in playing in front of a “passionate” Chennai crowd, and vowed to carry this momentum into the Indian T20 carnival starting later this month in CSK colours.
Sanju Samson acknowledges ‘special’ Chennai support
Yet to play his first match for CSK, franchise’s new-recruit Sanju Samson can already feel the ‘special love’ at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai.
The explosive Indian opener expressed his admiration for the passionate fans at the venue for welcoming him with open arms earlier this week for India’s crucial Super 8 fixture against Zimbabwe at the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

While speaking on BCCI.tv after the match, the 31-year-old said, “After the trade, this is the first time I'm coming to Chennai.
Right from the airport, I can feel the special love. Normally, we do come to Kerala and Chennai is very close, we do often come here, and I do feel that energy here. Fortunate to be a part of such a great and passionate fans here in Chennai.”
Sanju Samson vows to entertain Chennai crowd in IPL 2026
Following his match-winning cameo against Zimbabwe, Sanju Samson also vowed to entertain CSK fans in Chennai with similar pyrotechnics in the upcoming IPL 2026 season.
He added, “Really happy to go out there and entertain them in this way. I'm happy. More than just happiness, there's also a little extra responsibility. When everyone comes to cheer for you, I think there's an extra added responsibility to actually entertain them. So yeah, I'm very happy. Yes, we'll meet soon.”
Samson gearing up for maiden CSK stint
Sanju Samson is all set to join the CSK franchise in the coming weeks for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. The cricketer was traded in by CSK from Rajasthan Royals late last year prior to the auction.
The explosive right-hander has emerged as one of the most proficient run-makers in IPL cricket over the past decade.
After playing 177 matches in the tournament so far, the blistering top-order batter has aggregated 4,704 runs at a healthy average of nearly 31 and with an attacking strike rate of 139.04, plundering three tons and 26 fifties in the process.
In IPL 2026, Samson will be joining the likes of legendary stumper MS Dhoni, national teammate Shivam Dube, rising star Ayush Mhatre, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad among several others.

Before IPL 2026, Sanju Samson remains locked in on more pressing matters, with Team India navigating the decisive stages of the T20 World Cup 2026.
Mere days after storming back into the playing XI and justifying his promotion with a match-winning 15-ball 24 at the top, the cricketer will likely feature in India’s upcoming must-win Super 8 fixture.
Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, the defending champions will face West Indies on Sunday, March 1 at the Eden Gardens. A win at this stage of the tournament will help India qualify for the semifinals.
