The Indian team’s T20I captaincy has become a subject of intense speculation ahead of the next cycle of ICC tournaments. While Suryakumar Yadav remains the official leader, recent reports indicate that his position is no longer unquestioned.

Until now, most discussions revolved around Shreyas Iyer as the natural replacement if a change was made. But fresh inputs from inside the selection circle have thrown a new name into the ring, i.e., Sanju Samson.

What was earlier a straightforward succession plan has now turned into a genuine three-way leadership race.

Reports Back Sanju Samson In The T20I Leadership Race

According to journalist Abhishek Tripathi of Jagran News, selectors are not fully convinced about Suryakumar Yadav’s long-term captaincy despite his experience in the shortest format.

Iyer’s consistent performances and IPL leadership had reportedly made him the frontrunner. However, selectors are not in favour of making Shreyas the captain directly, and Sanju Samson is being seriously considered for the top job. The situation remains fluid, with no unanimous decision among the decision-makers yet.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Captaincy Under the Scanner

Suryakumar Yadav’s record as T20I captain cannot be called poor, but the team has struggled to dominate consistently under him. Despite major ICC and Asia Cup titles, Surya’s own form and captaincy record remain a thing of concern for the selectors.

This lack of absolute control has raised concerns within the selection panel. While he is widely regarded as one of the world’s best T20 batters, his own form with the bat has been inconsistent over the past year.

In modern cricket, a captain who is not delivering with the bat can quickly become a liability, especially when fresh leadership options are available.

Sources indicate that the selectors may eventually look for a younger and more stable long-term leader, even if Surya continues for the time being.

Shreyas Iyer, The Frontrunner For India's T20I Captaincy

For months, Shreyas Iyer was viewed as the logical successor. He has impressed both with his batting and his captaincy in franchise cricket, guiding his IPL teams to strong wins like Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings.

Shreyas’ calm temperament and sharp tactical awareness have earned him praise from teammates and experts alike. Iyer has also been a part of India’s ODI setup and has repeatedly shown the ability to handle pressure situations.

However, in the report, it emerged that selectors are not in favour of handing him the captaincy directly. One major roadblock is that Shreyas Iyer currently does not even have a confirmed slot in the T20I Playing XI.

Sanju Samson Become Prime Candidate For Leadership

It is here that Samson’s name has surfaced strongly. According to the latest updates, if Suryakumar Yadav steps aside or is removed, Sanju could become India’s next T20I captain.

The team management trusts Sanju deeply, viewing him as someone who has been part of the T20 setup for a long time and understands the format’s demands. In the event that Surya stays on as captain, Sanju is likely to be elevated as the new vice-captain, making him an integral part of the leadership group regardless of the final call.

The selectors have not yet reached a unanimous decision on removing Surya, but Samson’s name is very much on the table.

What Lies Ahead For Sanju Samson, Iyer, and Surya?

The biggest challenge before the selectors right now is the lack of a unanimous decision. They are not fully convinced about removing Suryakumar Yadav immediately, nor are they sure about appointing Shreyas Iyer as a direct replacement.

On the other hand, Sanju Samson’s leadership credentials have been built more through his presence in the T20 squad and the trust of the management than through high-profile captaincy roles in the IPL.

This makes the choice between pure captaincy experience and blind faith a tricky one. There are also discussions about giving these candidates opportunities during the upcoming Ireland and England series, which could serve as an audition for the permanent role. The Ireland series will start from June 26, while the England series will begin from July 1.
