Sanju Samson breaks silence after India heroics [Source: X]
India’s wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson has been the man of the moment with his heroic 97* against the West Indies, and the 31-year-old has finally broken his silence on the historic knock.
While opening up about his emotional innings at the iconic Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata, Sanju Samson also hinted at his immediate future in the T20 World Cup 2026 while thanking the immense support from the fans.
Sanju Samson Saves India’s Ship Amid Turbulent Red Sea
The heroic knock was one to remember on March 1, when India were struggling to secure a semi-final spot despite a solid run in the T20 World Cup 2026 group stage matches.
After a defeat against South Africa, the equation almost knocked the Men in Blue out of the ICC tournament if they failed to win the do-or-die contest against West Indies.
The match saw the Windies bat first, racking up a mammoth total of 195 on the board. Though the target looked achievable on a comparatively batting-friendly and smaller Eden Gardens pitch, the Men in Blue had early stumbles with Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan gone inside the powerplay, leaving India reeling at 41/2.
However, Sanju Samson held firm as he watched partners from the other end tumble consistently. Suryakumar Yadav, the skipper, also failed to make a mark with only 18 runs to his name. It was only Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya who put up some resistance after the quick wickets to help Samson steer the chase.
Shivam Dube's two boundaries in the penultimate over helped the Men in Blue close the gap on the required run rate as Samson struck the winning boundaries to guide the team to the second semi-final at Wankhede against England on March 5.

Samson Posts Special Message On Instagram
For the unaware, the Kerala batter was ignored for almost the entire T20 World Cup 2026. Samson only played in the Namibia clash after Abhishek Sharma fell ill.
He was then removed again from the playing eleven after Sharma returned. However, Rinku Singh's father's sudden death helped Samson return to the Playing XI, where he showed promise and justified India’s trust in him.
Adding to that trust, Sanju Samson posted an Instagram story about the massive emotional support he received from the fans.
“Just wanted to reach out and convey my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you who showed love, support, and kept me in your prayers. Seeing and experiencing so much love coming my way truly means a lot. Just want to say - THANK YOU ALL,” Samson wrote on his Instagram story.
While thanking them, Samson also hinted at his presence in the playing eleven for the last, possibly final two matches for India, against England and, if they win, the final on March 8, as he wrote, “Two more steps to go.”
Samson's comeback speaks of glory written in time and patience, as the Kerala batter has risen from the ashes of his past failures. Suryakumar Yadav’s men now face the challenge of resolving the Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan dilemma.
Samson Emergence Creates Another Dilemma
The duo, who were the firebrand openers for India for most of the group stage matches in this ICC event, failed in Eden Gardens, with Abhishek Sharma scoring only 10 runs.
Ishan Kishan, after being demoted to number three in the batting order, has also struggled heavily, recording ducks and low scores instead of the strong group stage knocks like 77 and 61. Obviously, this shift has been influenced by Sanju Samson's presence at the top.
Yet, as he continues to perform, the team management now has a riddle to solve if they want to stick with this playing XI for the remaining two crucial matches.
