It hasn’t been one of the best nights for Pakistan on February 28. The men in Green, led by captain Salman Agha was knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2026 even after beating Sri Lanka for their concluding Super 8 stage match.

The net run rate factors probed in, and even after a 5-run win at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, New Zealand was handed the Semi-Final spot. The tough luck added to Salman Agha’s woes throughout the tournament, which finally led him to speak on his captaincy exit.

The Heartbreaking Exit Of Pakistan From T20 World Cup 2026

Pakistan were languishing at the bottom of Super 8 Group 2, where they needed Sri Lanka to be restricted to 147 during their chase of 213 runs if they wanted to qualify for the semi-finals by knocking out New Zealand on net run rate.

However, although the match seemed in control for the Men in Green early on, Dasun Shanaka turned the momentum around. Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bowl first, but their bowlers were taken to the cleaners by Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman, who went berserk at the top to score 64 in the powerplay.

The opening duo stitched together 176 runs before Fakhar was cleaned up for a 42-ball 84. Farhan continued his onslaught to score a 59-ball 100 as Pakistan finished strongly, ending their innings at 212/8.

Sri Lanka’s innings began on a shaky note, with Naseem Shah dismissing Pathum Nissanka early. Kusal Mendis was also sent back for just 26 runs, which saw Sri Lanka end the powerplay at 49/2.

Charith Asalanka and Kamindu Mendis, along with Janith Liyanage, were also dismissed cheaply, while Pavan Rathnayake and skipper Dasun Shanaka played fluent knocks to keep their side in the hunt.

Eventually, Sri Lanka went past the 147-run mark, with Rathnayake scoring 58 off 37 balls and Shanaka smashing a 31-ball 76 to completely shift the equation.

Salman Agha On Captaincy Exit

Skipper Salman Ali Agha, however, had to face the brutal verdict. In the post-match press conference, Salman was asked directly whether he intended to resign from the captaincy of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

In response, the skipper remained calm and composed and said that hasty judgment would not be the proper solution, as he wanted to think with a clear mind.

“To make a decision right now would be purely emotional. We will return home, take a couple of days, perhaps two to four, and then determine the appropriate course of action,” Agha stated.

Agha On Where The Team’s Campaign Went Wrong

Speaking about where the team went wrong and where they could have done better, Salman Agha was straightforward and pointed out a disappointing performance from the spinners as well.

“Dew was definitely a factor in this game but we failed to execute our plans today. Usman had an off day today which can happen to anyone. He has been exceptional but one off day can happen,” Salman Agha added.

Highlighting their batting struggles and failures against big teams like India, Agha owned up to the mistakes.

“I think we failed to bat well in this tournament. It was only Sahibzada Farhan who batted exceptionally well. During that period if anyone would've helped him more, it could've been a different story but the batting was always a concern throughout the tournament,” Agha added.

Agha’s Record As Pakistan T20I Skipper

As captain, Salman Agha has led Pakistan in 50 T20Is, recording 31 wins and 18 defeats, reflecting a solid win-loss ratio of 1.72.

Though his success cannot be ignored, his tenure during two major events like the Asia Cup T20 2025 and the T20 World Cup 2026, including a defeat in the final and an early exit, might prompt a change in the team’s captaincy soon.
