The IPL 2026 season is ready to begin, and once again the world’s richest cricket league will bring together ten strong teams fighting for the prestigious trophy.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK), one of the most successful franchises in IPL history with five titles, enter the 2026 season with a strong desire to bounce back. The 2025 season proved very difficult for the team.
CSK finished at the bottom of the points table and managed to secure only four wins throughout the tournament. As a result, the franchise will now aim to start fresh and regain its competitive edge.
CSK will begin their IPL 2026 campaign with an away match against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. With the new season only a few days away, it is the right time to evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for CSK in IPL 2026.
CSK squad for IPL 2026 season
MS Dhoni (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Sanju Samson (traded in from RR), Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, Urvil Patel, Noor Ahmad, Nathan Ellis, Shreyas Gopal, Khaleel Ahmed, Ramakrishna Ghosh, Mukesh Choudhary, Jamie Overton, Gurjapneet Singh, Anshul Kamboj, Akeal Hosein, Prashant Veer, Kartik Sharma (wk), Matthew Short, Aman Khan, Sarfaraz Khan, Matt Henry, Rahul Chahar, Zak Foulkes
Strengths of CSK for 2026
1. Dynamic top order
One of the biggest positives for CSK this season is their strong top-order batting lineup. The inclusion of Sanju Samson ahead of IPL 2026 has added experience and stability at the top. At the same time, Ruturaj Gaikwad continues to be one of the most dependable batters in the team.
| Batters | Innings | Runs | Strike Rate | Average |
| Sanju Samson | 125 | 1380 | 123.8 | 34.5 |
| Ruturaj Gaikwad | 67 | 1196 | 127.9 | 46 |
| Ayush Mhatre | 7 | 177 | 192.4 | 35.4 |
(Stats of CSK players in PP in IPL)
Notably, Gaikwad has shown great consistency over the years and plays the role of an anchor very well. Samson also brings a similar sense of stability along with the ability to accelerate when required. Together, they provide a balanced start to the innings.
In addition, young batter Ayush Mhatre has impressed with his aggressive style. During the previous IPL season, he displayed glimpses of fearless hitting, especially during the powerplay overs, scoring 177 runs in seven innings.
As shown in the stats above, these numbers indicate that the CSK top order can provide both stability and attacking intent. As a result, the team can build solid starts and accelerate when needed.
2. Spin-hitting prowess of Dube and Brevis
Another major strength for CSK lies in their middle order. Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis are two players who can change the momentum of a match very quickly, especially against spin bowling.
Shivam Dube has developed into a dangerous batter against spinners. Over the years, the Mumbai batter has consistently shown his ability to clear boundaries and dominate spinners. Notably, during the T20 World Cup, his performances proved his value as a powerful middle-order hitter and a reliable finisher.
| Batters | Innings | Runs | Average | Strike Rate |
| Shivam Dube | 60 | 699 | 38.8 | 141.2 |
| Dewald Brevis | 13 | 179 | 59.7 | 143.2 |
(Dube and Brevis vs all types of spin)
Meanwhile, Dewald Brevis also brings exciting energy to the team. The young South African batter displayed great potential during the previous season, scoring 179 runs in 13 innings with a superb average of 59.7 and a strike rate of 143.2 against all types of spin.
As mentioned in the table above, their numbers against spin bowling show how effective they are. Therefore, these two players can help CSK dominate the middle overs and maintain scoring momentum.

3. All-round spin attack
Even after the departure of Ravindra Jadeja and the retirement of R Ashwin, CSK still possess a strong and diverse spin attack. The bowling unit includes several spinners with different skills and variations.
Notably, Noor Ahmad provides wicket-taking ability through his left-arm wrist spin. Akeal Hosein is known for his accuracy and control, particularly during the powerplay overs. Rahul Chahar brings leg-spin variety, while Matthew Short can also contribute useful overs when required.
This combination gives CSK flexibility in their bowling strategy. The team can control the middle overs, create pressure on opposition batters, and pick up important wickets.
Weakness of CSK for 2026
Undercooked lower middle order
One noticeable weakness in the CSK lineup appears in the lower middle order. Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer are relatively new players who are still gaining experience at the highest level.
In addition, the CSK legend MS Dhoni is at the final stage of his playing career. This means the team may sometimes lack experienced finishers in pressure situations.
For this reason, the management might consider introducing Jamie Overton later in the tournament. His international exposure can provide stability and strength to the lower order.
Pace battery slightly Over-reliant on Khaleel Ahmed
Another concern lies in the pace bowling department. The fast bowling attack depends heavily on Khaleel Ahmed to lead the Indian pace unit. While, he is expected to receive support from Mukesh Choudhary, Gurjapneet Singh, Anshul Kamboj, and Ramakrishna Ghosh.
Although a few of these players have IPL experience, the overall pace attack still lacks depth and variety. Matt Henry has dealt with injury issues in the past, while some of the younger bowlers are still developing their skills.
In certain situations Shivam Dube might also contribute a few overs. Notably, Dube's bowling has improved recently, which gives the team another option when needed.
Opportunities for CSK for 2026
The upcoming season presents a historic opportunity for CSK. At the moment, both CSK and Mumbai Indians hold the record for the most IPL titles with five championships each.
If CSK manage to win the tournament this year, they will become the first team in IPL history to secure six titles.
Threats for CSK for 2026
One possible challenge for CSK could arise from the conditions at their home ground in Chennai. The Chepauk pitch has recently become more friendly for batters.
Since CSK have built a spin-heavy squad, opponents might try to take advantage of these conditions by attacking the spinners aggressively. This situation might create difficult match scenarios for the team.
During the previous season, Noor Ahmad faced some struggles at this venue even though he finished the tournament with 24 wickets in 14 innings and an economy rate of 8.16. Therefore pitch behaviour will play an important role in determining how successful the team can be.
