After India’s disappointing white-ball tour of England, India men’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has stepped down from his role.

According to a report by ESPNCricinfo, the former Netherlands captain informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about his decision while the team was still in the United Kingdom on Tuesday.

It is important to note that this update comes after India endured a difficult tour in UK, losing both the T20I and ODI series against England. According to India Today, Ryan ten Doeschate was offered a contract extension with Team India until ODI World Cup 2027. However, he opted to put family first and decided to move on from the India setup.

Ryan ten Doeschate Set To Join KKR

Meanwhile, another major development has emerged following Ryan ten Doeschate’s exit from the Indian team setup. Notably, the former India assistant coach is now set to return to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) coaching staff ahead of IPL 2027 season, where he will reunite with Abhishek Nayar

Although reports of his return had been circulating for some time, ESPNcricinfo has now confirmed the development.

Interestingly, Ryan Ten Doeschate shares a long and successful association with KKR. It is worth mentioning that he represented the franchise as a player for 5 consecutive IPL seasons before being appointed as the team’s fielding coach in late 2022.

Furthermore, he was a key member of the KKR coaching setup alongside then mentor Gautam Gambhir, helping the franchise lift the IPL 2024 title.

Ryan ten Doeschate’s Coaching Stint With Team India

Ryan ten Doeschate’s move to the Indian team came soon after he helped KKR win their 3rd IPL title.

Following that successful campaign, he was appointed as India’s assistant coach after Gautam Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid as the head coach following India’s triumph in 2024 T20 World Cup.

Notably, Ten Doeschate’s appointment was strongly backed by Gambhir, with whom he had previously worked at KKR.

During his tenure with Team India, Ten Doeschate was part of a highly successful coaching group. Under the Gambhir-led support staff, India won 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup, both held in UAE. Furthermore, the Men in Blue also lifted 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on home soil.

Ryan ten Doeschate’s KKR Return Hints At Major Coaching Changes

Ryan ten Doeschate’s return to KKR coaching setup could signal significant changes ahead of IPL 2027 season. With the former India assistant coach rejoining the franchise, it is expected that KKR might consider reshuffling their coaching staff after a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign.

One of the biggest talking points is the future of the head coach’s role. Current KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar, who was appointed ahead of IPL 2026, was unable to guide the franchise to the playoffs. Notably, KKR finished 7th on the points table with 6 wins and 7 defeats, leading to speculation that the management could review its coaching structure.

Meanwhile, former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson, who is currently KKR’s assistant coach, has strengthened his credentials after guiding the Los Angeles Knight Riders to an impressive campaign in Major League Cricket (MLC 2026). As a result, KKR could look to make changes to their coaching group before the next edition of the tournament.
