In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) is finally set to clear the air on Rohit Sharma’s future in Indian cricket. The BCCI, as reported by Cricbuzz, will take the final call on whether he should be considered in India’s squad for the World Cup 2027 and keep him in the loop till it was finalised.
Previously, it was reported that Rohit was all set to retire from international cricket following discussions with the BCCI's selection committee. However, it did not take long for a change in plans on Rohit, and there is still no clarity on exactly what happened between the BCCI's top brass and their selection committee.
Indian cricket's top brass to decide Rohit Sharma' s fate
There will be a very important BCCI meeting in Mumbai, scheduled for Thursday. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, Centre of Excellence (CoE) head VVS Laxman and head coach Gautam Gambhir will all attend the meeting in person, among others.
In fact, ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill and T20I captain Shreyas Iyer could also be linked up there as well.
All of them, in some or another, will give their inputs on Rohit Sharma’s future. Given that he only plays ODIs now, it goes without saying that Shubman Gill, the current leader of the 50-over set-up for India, will have a major say on this subject.

“The BCCI and the chief selectors did not appear to be on the same page over his (Rohit Sharma’s) future. The meeting should throw some light on Rohit’s future,” a Cricbuzz report read regarding the upcoming BCCI meeting.
Why ODI Great Rohit Finds Himself In BCCI Hotseat
Widely regarded as the one of the finest ODI openers of all time, Rohit averages 48.95 in the format, having aggregated 11895 runs in 288 matches. He also has 34 centuries and 62 half-centuries, and more significantly, three double centuries.
Being someone who has such an extraordinary ODI record, some might feel Rohit Sharma’s future should not be even discussed until and unless he decides to take retirement from the format.
However, he had a torrid form in ODIs in 2026. Thanks to his spectacular 138-run knock at Lord’s, the numbers have improved as things stand.
To highlight more, Rohit had only one 50+ score in eight innings in 2026 before the century at Lord’s. Still, his overall ODI numbers are well below the lofty expectations, with an average of 42.11 for 379 runs across nine innings speaking volumes.
India already have Shubman Gill, with Ishan Kishan and Yashasvi Jaiswal being there if needed for the opening slot. Hence, if Rohit, now aged 39, cannot set the tone consistently, his position, of course, will be questioned.
And the BCCI is well aware of the fact, and they also know there will be lot of expectations to deliver in World Cup 2027 after what happened in the previous edition at home.
