Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are set for a major leadership change ahead of the IPL 2027 season after captain Rishabh Pant stepped down from his role following a disappointing campaign in IPL 2026.

The franchise had invested heavily in Rishabh Pant, spending ₹27 crore to bring him into the squad and handing him the captaincy.

The franchise officially confirmed that Pant had requested to be relieved of his captaincy duties, and the management accepted his decision immediately.

LSG suffer their most difficult IPL campaign

The IPL 2026 turned out to be a season to forget for Lucknow Super Giants. Entering the tournament with high expectations, the team struggled to find consistency throughout the campaign.

Under Rishabh Pant's leadership, LSG managed to win only four of their 14 league matches.

They finished at the bottom of the points table, marking the first time since joining the IPL in 2022 that the franchise ended a season in last place.

Rishabh Pant decides to step away from leadership

During the IPL 2026 playoffs, Lucknow Super Giants released an official statement confirming Pant's decision to step down as captain.

The franchise stated that Pant had requested to be relieved of captaincy responsibilities and that the management had accepted his request with immediate effect.

The decision is believed to have been taken so that Rishabh Pant can focus more on his batting and wicketkeeping responsibilities.

"Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) wish to formally announce that Rishabh Pant has requested to be relieved of his captaincy duties with the franchise, and the franchise has accepted his request with immediate effect."

Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram become front-runners for captaincy

Following Pant's resignation, discussions have already started regarding LSG's next captain. Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer has suggested Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram as strong options for the leadership role.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jaffer described Pant's decision as the right move and pointed out that leadership may not suit his natural style.

He added that both Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram have valuable leadership experience at the international level.

“I think it’s a good decision, whether it’s the franchise telling him or his own decision. A decision in the right direction. You are doing wicketkeeping and are reactive and impulsive. A captain should control his emotions. It’s not his mistake but his nature. He shouldn’t be the captain. He needs to accept that he can’t do things like planning or handling players.

"He struggles as a leader. There’s nothing wrong, just play as a player. Good decision and in the right direction. Whether Mitchell Marsh or Aiden Markram leads the side, they have done it for their national sides. Aiden Markram especially has a sound temperament and does good captaincy. They can choose someone else as well."

While LSG could consider other options, Marsh and Markram currently appear to be the strongest contenders for the captaincy ahead of IPL 2027.

Pant's captaincy record

Rishabh Pant's IPL captaincy started in 2021 when he took charge of Delhi Capitals. It is important to note that Pant had led DC in 43 matches, with 23 wins and 19 defeats (win percentage: 53.48%).

However, his stint with LSG was less successful. Across two seasons, Pant captained LSG in 28 matches, winning only 11 and losing 17.
