One of the newest franchises in the Indian Premier League, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), under the leadership of Rishabh Pant, suffered a disappointing run in the IPL 2026, finishing last in the points table with only 4 wins in 14 games.

Despite assembling a formidable, explosive contingent, LSG struggled heavily with the bat. Their international core, including Rishabh Pant and Nicholas Pooran, was flagged for underwhelming returns.

Notably, barring Mitchell Marsh, no other LSG batter finished in the tournament's top 20 run-scorers list.

Historically formidable at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, LSG's notorious spin-friendly grip failed to trouble visiting teams in 2026, leading to several tough home defeats.

Thus, after LSG’s upset in IPL 2026, the wicket-keeper batter, Rishabh Pant, conveyed his wish to step away from the leadership role after a two-year stint.

What went wrong for Rishabh Pant as LSG captain?

The Sanjiv Goenka-owned IPL franchise, LSG, splashed out INR 27 Cr on Rishabh Pant at the IPL 2025 mega-auction. But things went horribly wrong for both Pant and his franchise in the coming two seasons.

In both IPL 2025 and 2026, LSG failed to qualify for the playoffs, and Pant endured a historic low in the competition. This led to questions about Pant’s ability as a T20 batter and leader.

On top of that, right after the Lucknow-based franchise’s exit from the 2026 season, Rishabh Pant was also snubbed from the role of vice-captain of the Indian Test side. Further, adding salt to the injury.

Now that Pant’s role as the leader ends with the Lucknow Super Giants, in this article, take a look at Rishabh Pant’s record as a captain in the IPL.

A quick glance at Rishabh Pant’s IPL journey

A dashing left-handed batter who keeps wicket as well for his side, Rishabh Pant has made a name for himself in the Indian Premier League.

A young boy from Delhi, Pant made his IPL debut on April 27, 2016, for the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) against the Gujarat Lions at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Soon, he became the face of the franchise, scoring 684 runs in a breakthrough 2018 season. In 2021, he was rewarded with the captaincy of DC, leading them to the top of the table.

However, the franchise under Pant failed to replicate the success in the later seasons, prompting him to part ways with Delhi Capitals.

In November 2024, Rishabh Pant made history by becoming the most expensive player in IPL history, acquired by LSG for a staggering INR 27 crore, becoming the most expensive player in IPL history.

Following back-to-back underwhelming seasons and a 10th-place finish in 2026, he stepped down from the captaincy in May 2026.

Pant’s leadership journey in the IPL began in 2021, when he was thrust into the captaincy role for Delhi Capitals after Shreyas Iyer was sidelined due to injury.

His captaincy was interrupted in 2023 due to a serious car accident, which led to his absence from the IPL that season. However, he made a remarkable recovery and returned to captain Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024.

His overall record as DC captain is commendable, with a win percentage of 53.48%. Out of the 43 matches he captained, he led his team to victory 23 times while losing 19 matches.

However, he could not impress as much as the LSG captain. Overall, Pant led LSG in 28 matches across two seasons, out of which they won only 11, while they were on the losing side on 17 occasions.

Following back-to-back underwhelming seasons and a 10th-place finish in 2026, he stepped down from the captaincy in May 2026.
