The 19th edition of the IPL is expected to begin in late March and run until the last week of May. However, unlike previous seasons, the full schedule has not been announced yet by the BCCI, leaving fans curious and slightly concerned about the delay.
Usually by this time, fixtures, venues and match dates are officially confirmed by the BCCI. This year, though, there has been no formal announcement, even with less than two months remaining before the tournament’s expected start window.
With supporters closely following the ongoing T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, many are wondering why there is still uncertainty around IPL dates. The delay has sparked speculation, but revelations now suggest there is a specific reason behind the BCCI holding back the official release.
Reason behind BCCI delaying IPL schedule release
According to a report from India Today, the main reason behind the delay of announcing the IPL schedule is the potential clash between IPL 2026 and upcoming Assembly elections in Assam, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal as these states are home to key franchises and major venues.
Teams like CSK and KKR could face scheduling issues if match dates overlap with polling or counting days. Large-scale security deployment during elections makes it difficult for state authorities to provide enough protection for IPL fixtures.
Because of this uncertainty, the BCCI is reportedly waiting for official confirmation of election dates before finalising the schedule. Releasing fixtures without clarity could result in last-minute changes, affecting teams, broadcasters and fans planning to attend matches.
Why elections create a major problem for IPL
Elections require heavy deployment of state police and security forces across cities and districts. During polling and counting periods, security personnel are prioritised for election duties, leaving limited options available to manage large sporting events like IPL matches.
Stadiums such as Eden Gardens could face availability concerns if security cannot be guaranteed. In previous situations, matches have been shifted to alternate venues, but with Assam also holding elections, KKR face lack in backup options as well.
As a result, to avoid chaos, the BCCI may consider releasing the schedule in two phases. The first phase could include confirmed dates, while the remaining fixtures may be announced later once election authorities finalise polling schedules, a strategy used in earlier seasons.
Off-field issues and venue logistics also affecting IPL schedule
Apart from elections, venue readiness and logistical planning are also slowing things down. Several major grounds are currently hosting international matches and will require time for preparation before the IPL begins. Coordinating stadium handovers, travel schedules and broadcast arrangements adds further to the mess.
Moreover, there have been home venue issues for a couple of franchises. Rajasthan Royals are dealing with administrative concerns at their traditional base in Jaipur while RCB, the defending champions, are uncertain about getting to play in M. Chinnaswamy Stadium this year. With so many moving parts, the delay appears strategic rather than unusual as officials work to avoid last-minute disruptions.
