Bangladesh bundled out for just 160 in their must-win game against Afghanistan in the third ODI of their UAE ODI Tri-Series 2026. Moreover, Bangladesh started off the match by crashing to 28-4, before another batting collapse blew away their lower-order.
It is worth noting that it is imperative for the Bangladesh cricket team to register a comprehensive win over Afghanistan in a bid to reach the final of the 2026 UAE ODI Tri-Series in Sharjah. Here is a look at Bangladesh’s revised scenario in their bid of staying alive in the series.
Bangladesh need to win by 41 or more runs for a place in the final
The Bangladesh cricket team need to keep Afghanistan to 119 or fewer runs during the latter’s run chase in match number three of the 2026 UAE ODI Tri-Series in Sharjah.
Led by interim captain Towhid Hridoy, the team faces an uphill task for survival, considering several of Afghanistan batters are in prolific touch with the bat off late, as evidenced by their emphatic win over Zimbabwe just a couple of days ago in Abu Dhabi.
As mentioned earlier this week, the Bangladesh cricket team need to win its match against Afghanistan by 41 or more runs at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. In such a scenario, Bangladesh’s NRR will pip Zimbabwe to become the second finalist of the UAE ODI tri-series.
As of now, their NRR reads a dismal -1.980 courtesy of their crushing 99-run defeat against Zimbabwe in the opening ODI of the series back in October 17.
Why is Bangladesh in such a dire situation in UAE tri-series?
Bangladesh captain Litton Das was ruled out of the ODI tri-series before the opening match itself owing to an injury. Under Towhid Hridoy, the team suffered a demoralizing defeat to Zimbabwe by 99 runs just a few days ago.
While Zimbabwe also lost to Afghanistan by 158 runs next-up, their NRR of -0.590 stood much stronger than Bangladesh’s dismal -1.980 before the final opening round fixture of the series on October 21.
In short, Bangladesh have largely themselves to blame for their precarious position, with their heavy defeat to Zimbabwe leaving them with little margin for error heading into the final league fixture.
