Steve Smith did not come out to bat at his usual number four position for Australia in their second innings against South Africa in Gqeberha. After the fall of Marnus Labuschagne at number three, it was Matt Renshaw who came out to the middle at 100-2 before the drinks break on Day 4.
It appears that Smith is still suffering from a niggle, which also forced him to bat at number five in the first Australian innings of the match earlier in the day.
Smith ditches usual spot for Australia for the second time in the match
With Australia facing an uphill task for mere survival against South Africa at the St. George's Park in Gqeberha, legendary batter Steve Smith refused to come out to the middle at his usual number four position for his side in their second innings on Day 4 on October 21.
As per reports, the neck cramps is still bothering the legendary Australian batter, thus forcing him to ditch his usual batting spot for Australia.
The Australian team management has since sent out in-form cricketer Matt Renshaw to bat at number four at 100-2 at the start of the 33rd over of the innings.
It is worth noting that the senior pro also batted at number five for Australia earlier in the day in their first innings. He still managed to top-score for his side, albeit with just 28 runs to his name as the visitors bundled out for 99 in 42.3 overs.
However, in the second innings, Smith also did not come out to bat at number five as the Australian team management sent out Beau Webster after the fall of in-form Matt Renshaw at 123-3.
As of now, it remains to be seen when can the 37-year-old attain full recovery and resume batting command for Australia in their battle for survival in Gqeberha.
