Bangladesh find themselves in a must-win situation in the ongoing UAE Tri-Series. Their hopes of reaching the final remain alive, but qualification depends on multiple factors.

After losing their opening match against Zimbabwe, Bangladesh face Afghanistan on Wednesday, October 21 in Abu Dhabi, knowing they need a big win to seal a place in the UAE Tri-Series final.

Afghanistan’s Big Win Over Zimbabwe Puts Bangladesh In A Do-or-Die Situation

Afghanistan made a statement in the second match of the ongoing UAE Tri-Series on Monday, thrashing Zimbabwe by 158 runs. They posted 294 before bowling Sikandar Raza’s men out for 136.

Zimbabwe had earlier defeated Bangladesh in the opening match on Saturday, handing them a 99-run loss. Chasing a target of 272, Bangladesh struggled with the bat and were bowled out for just 172.

With Afghanistan securing a dominant victory over Zimbabwe, Bangladesh face a do-or-die situation. They must secure a win against Afghanistan on Wednesday, but victory alone may not be enough to qualify for the UAE Tri-Series final.

Bangladesh’s Qualification Scenario For UAE Tri-Series Final Ahead Of Afghanistan ODI

Bangladesh’s 99-run defeat against Zimbabwe significantly dented their net run rate (NRR), which currently stands at -1.980. Zimbabwe’s NRR is -0.590, while Afghanistan’s massive 158-run victory boosted theirs to +3.160.

Bangladesh must now beat Afghanistan convincingly in their final league match on Wednesday, October 21, to overtake Zimbabwe’s NRR and secure a place in the UAE Tri-Series final. A narrow victory might not be enough.

  • If Bangladesh bat first, they will need to win by approximately 41 runs to surpass Zimbabwe’s NRR. However, the exact margin required could vary depending on the final scores and match calculations.
  • If Afghanistan bat first, Bangladesh must restrict them to a manageable total and chase it down quickly. For instance, chasing 200 in around 40.3 overs or 225 in approximately 41 overs could help Bangladesh improve their NRR enough to overtake Zimbabwe

Bangladesh’s route to the final is therefore far from straightforward. They need a complete performance with both bat and ball, as only a convincing victory may be enough to take them into the final of the UAE Tri-series.
