The opening match of IPL 2026 in Bengaluru was expected to bring excitement and celebration. The match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad drew a huge crowd on Saturday, March 29.
However, the event turned stressful for many fans. Instead of enjoying cricket, several spectators faced the loss of their mobile phones during the match.
During the game at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, many fans noticed their phones missing. As the crowd moved in large numbers, especially during peak moments, thieves found easy chances to act.
Bengaluru police receive complaints from different sections of Chinnaswamy Stadium
Moreover, complaints came from different sections of the stadium. In addition, nearby areas like MG Road and Cubbon Park Metro Station also saw similar incidents. Therefore, the issue quickly became serious and raised concerns about safety at such large events.
After receiving multiple complaints, the police began a detailed investigation. Soon, they followed important leads and detained several suspects.
Eventually, four individuals were arrested, and among them were minors. Reports revealed that these minors were working under instructions from a larger gang. Furthermore, this gang was said to be from outside Karnataka and had planned the thefts in advance.
Police recover 21 stolen phones worth ₹18 lakh
The police achieved a major success during the operation. They recovered 21 stolen mobile phones, and the total value was around ₹18 lakh. This recovery brought some relief to the victims.
According to Seemant Kumar Singh, efforts are still ongoing to catch other members of the gang who managed to escape. In addition, authorities are continuing their search in different locations linked to the suspects.

Reports suggest that the accused took advantage of heavy crowds. As people focused on the match, the thieves quietly stole phones from pockets and bags. Moreover, crowded entry and exit points made it easier for them to disappear quickly.
This incident has once again raised questions about safety at large venues. Last year, the same stadium faced criticism after a tragic stampede incident after RCB's title win. Since then, authorities have taken extra steps to improve safety. However, cases like theft show that more attention is still needed.
Authorities issue advice for IPL fans
Authorities have urged people to stay alert during large gatherings. They have also advised fans to report any suspicious activity immediately. Moreover, visitors are encouraged to keep their valuables secure at all times.
Talking about the match, the opening game of IPL 2026 started in an exciting way. SRH batting first scored 201/9, with captain Ishan Kishan scoring 80 off 38 balls, while Aniket Verma added a quick 43 off 18 balls.
In response, RCB chased the target in just 15.4 overs. Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 69, and Rajat Patidar scored 61. RCB won the match by 6 wickets and made a strong start to the tournament.
Looking ahead, the stadium will host another big match between RCB and CSK on April 5. Therefore, officials are likely to strengthen security measures.
