The PSL 2026 season eliminator 1 game between Multan Sultans and Hyderabad Kingsmen delivered an extraordinary moment as Steve Smith made an impact with the ball.
For context, the knockout fixture was taking place at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, where the Sultans batted first. Shan Masood’s 69* off 46 balls knock guided Multan to a decent total of 159/9 at the end of the first 20 overs.
Steve Smith gets a wicket in PSL Eliminator 1
Meanwhile, in the chase, Hyderabad Kingsmen lost skipper Marnus Labuschagne early with just 18 runs on the board. Regardless, Maaz Sadaqat and Usman Khan rebuilt the inning with a 102-run partnership for the second wicket.
With nothing working for Multan Sultans, captain Ashton Turner handed the ball to Australian veteran Steve Smith. Usman Khan initially went for the attack, smashing Smith for back-to-back sixes and targeting the longer boundary with aggressive slog sweeps.
It looked like a typical part-time bowler being lined up. But Smith responded smartly. He kept tossing the ball up, tempting another big shot, and Usman went for one too many.

Trying to clear long-on again, he mistimed it and was caught by Mohammad Nawaz in the deep with that, Steve Smith got his maiden PSL wicket. He not only achieved a milestone but also helped his team get a crucial breakthrough in a high-pressure game like the Eliminator 1.
Steve Smith earlier had an outburst
Meanwhile, in the first innings, Steve Smith had a rare outburst. Having dominated the same opposition earlier with a blazing century, Smith couldn’t replicate that form in the high-pressure knockout clash.
After being dropped once, he fell trying to force the pace, only to be caught by Maaz Sadaqat. The dismissal triggered a visible reaction, with Steve Smith smashing his bat in anger while heading back to the dressing room.
The frustration was understandable given the context. Multan Sultans were already under pressure after missing a top-two finish, and Smith’s wicket contributed to an early collapse that left their campaign hanging by a thread.
