Veteran Indian opener Rohit Sharma was absent from the playing XI of the Mumbai Indians in their clash against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026. However, fans weren’t happy, as just hours before, Rohit made a teasing post on social media.

MI won the toss at the Wankhede Stadium and surprisingly opted to bat first. At the toss, captain Hardik Pandya confirmed that Rohit will not be taking part in this fixture as he is not fit and available for selection.

Fans are upset as Rohit Sharma gives false hope

For context, Rohit Sharma is nursing a hamstring injury and will take at least a couple of more games to be match-ready, as revealed by Hardik Pandya. However, fans weren’t amused with this update.

Just hours before the MI vs SRH game, Rohit had posted a picture of himself holding an orange slice on social media. Fans assumed that the reference to orange was linked to SRH, as they are called the ‘Orange Army.’

Many believed that the post was a hint that Rohit might be available to take on SRH at the Wankhede Stadium. However, the tease turned out to be a false alarm, and fans naturally expressed their displeasure in the comment section.

As of now, Rohit Sharma has been ruled out for the next week. Mumbai Indians management is yet to comment on the injury status. However, Rohit is still taking part in practice sessions, which suggests that his comeback is just around the corner.

Quinton de Kock also injured

In yet another setback, the Mumbai Indians have also lost in-form opener Quinton de Kock to wrist injury. He was replaced by Ryan Rickelton in the MI vs SRH game.

Captain Hardik Pandya confirmed that de Kock took a blow to his wrist during the warm-up session and hence will not be taking further part in the game.

This is a huge blow to MI, which is already struggling to keep players safe. Earlier, Mitchell Santner banged his shoulder while fielding against CSK and was ruled out for the entire season. Keshav Maharaj has joined the squad as an injury replacement.

It's important to note that MI are seated at the ninth spot on the points table with just 2 wins in the first 7 games. Hence, this is a must-win game for them to stay alive in the playoff race.

Mumbai Indians start well against SRH

Coming back to the game, Mumbai Indians openers Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton made a flying start against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium.

Opting to bat first, MI raced to 37/0 in just 3 overs, setting an aggressive tone right from the outset. The opening pair looked in complete control, scoring at over 12 runs per over.

Jacks has been particularly explosive with boundaries, while Rickelton has complemented him with a steady strike rate.

On the bowling front, Pat Cummins has been slightly expensive despite keeping things tight in patches, while the early overs have offered little assistance to the bowlers.
