The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday punished Prabath Jayasuriya for breaching ICC Code of Conduct during the second Test between India and Sri Lanka, taking place in Colombo.
In the process, he became the third player, after Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando, to face ICC sanction in the middle of an ongoing Test match.
ICC Breaks Down Prabath Jayasuriya’s Disciplinary Breach
After being dismissed on the final ball of the day, Jayasuriya struck the boundary wedges with his bat in frustration while returning to the pavilion. He did it because Sri Lanka wanted to stop the play due to bat light, but on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Saikat rejected their request.
Prabath Jayasuriya came in as a night watchman, and fell for a seven-ball two despite taking a DRS against the on-field verdict.

Later, the ICC explained Jayasuriya’s disciplinary breach, and why exactly he was punished.

"Jayasuriya was found to have breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match," an ICC statement read.
"One demerit point has also been added to his disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period," it added.
Jayasuriya Accepts ICC Charge And Sanction
Furthermore, the ICC confirmed that Jayasuriya acknowledged his mistake, and accepted whatever consequences the cricket’s highest body had decided to punish him for his doings.
"Jayasuriya admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for a formal hearing after on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker, and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella levelled the charge," another ICC statement read.
In the first innings, Prabath Jayasuriya bowled the most number of overs for Sri Lanka: 42. He gave up 3.10 runs per over, having conceded 132 runs for two wickets. Manav Suthar and Mohammed Siraj were his wickets.
Interestingly, Jayasuriya’s reactions, for which he had to face ICC sanction, came after losing his wicket to Manav Suthar.
Why Jaiswal and Asitha Faced ICC Sanction
Before Jayasuriya, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando faced the ICC sanction. The duo had a heated argument on the field after Jaiswal’s wicket in the first innings.
Things went from bad to worse after Asitha exchanged a few words with Jaiswal. India’s young opener walked back and even leaned his helmet towards the Sri Lanka pacer. As a result, it became direct head-to-head confrontation.
Even though Jaiswal, in the middle of the match, tried to justify his actions, the ICC had no choice but to punish both of them, saying it was all unnecessary keeping the spirit of cricket in mind.
